Cool New Mexico winters the relative humidity hovers at 28%

It will help it expand and push into the pores on the wood. I try to always spray my joints, regardless of RH
2x T39, 1x T60, 1x THTLP, 1x AT(not built by me) 6x DR250
I need more bass

But this gal's built like a burlap bag full of bobcats

Day 4

My cousin was off today to we started early, but not on the current tuba. We hoped by the end of the day to finish the tuba all the way the last panel. Wishful thinking but set high standards get more done right lol.

We opened the 1st tuba and set about fixing the “damn” tee nuts the striped during the build. We gently sawed using a hacksaw wrapped with yarn until we sawed all offending screws. We hooked it up and “subjectively” the Lab doubled the Tubas power lol compared to the Peavey Lo rider tuba. We promptly went to buy more Labs for the rest of the completed tubas.

The “Dead reckoning” that’s talked about with fitting some panel’s lol the straightening jigs helps. Some plywood seems to want to warp the smaller its cut.

One 4’x8’ can provide 3 panels 8 it’s the only panel that not matches for the grain due to economy. The panel will still be short about 4 inches but there’s a way to deal with that.

Panel 8 is a pet peeve of mind so I transfer horn path measurements to the brace so I shim the panel straight on the open end.

I found a 1960 1-inch blade drill and remembering the dent in my friend truck I decided to place hand holds in panel 10 for lifting. I prefer hands hold that mold to the hand so I got myself smiling hand holds on this tuba.

This is the extension cut to fit to complete panel 9. The hand hold needs to accommodate a large palm since many of the movers in our area have “heft” …. in their hands.

The hand cut out turned out to be too small so it will be cut larger tomorrow.

Day 5

17 hours, that’s what we used for day 5. WE are in a crunch to have the tuba tested by Saturday so we stayed up until it was done. I must say that lack of sleep could just be as bad as two high balls lol. (Which at the end wouldn’t have mind having) Around midnight My cousin and I pondered why we aren’t out and about drinking and dancing with the rest of our friends.

12pm – used the time to flip the tuba up and plug the countersunk screws. I found a masonry bit that would open the holes just enough to make the 3/8th plugs fit perfectly without glue.

We needed to make the hand opening bigger so I grabbed and marked until the opening was big enough for the heftiest hand.

Bill Fits talks of using the sealed chamber for cable storage and having used the previous tubas this would be an added bonus.

After I roughed out the hole I saw panel ( #5) and said hey “if I place the Speakon connector in panel 5 then we would eliminate the limited positions we could place the tuba is we used the access panel as the Speakon outlet.

Grandpas handsaw has been more useful for short straight cuts. Don’t underestimate the power of old hand tools and carpentry methods.

Staining the inner horn path now makes a nicer presentation since we don’t use a grill on the tubas. Take care no to paint too much into the joints. Paint and stain can change how PL bonds so its just a precaution.
