4 Dual T60s!

#1 Post by DJ Higgumz »

Ok time to go big! Not as big as Hifibob, but plenty big for me. I've ran my Single 20" T60s for a good 2 years now, and now I'm on to building the Duals, I am pretty sure I can handle the extra 75 lbs or so I would be adding. Anyways I'm building 4 duals, loading 2 for now, then I will load the next 2 when I need them. I picked up 16 sheets of ply, I have a bunch of half and quarter sheets that I will be using up as well. each one would take 5 sheets of 4x8 if you were to build the duals, in case you were wondering. What type of covering should I look into? For this size cabinet duratex is too soft. If it's cheap enough I wouldn't mind going to Line-X and just get them sprayed. anyways here's all the plywood!

I have not been active in the past year :( just been so busy. So what's the latest guys? What is the best way to upload photos?

You are a maniac. That's a lot of wood and drivers to be buying. Do you have some large gigs lined up? Or is this just for intimate listening in your front room? Lol.

I plan to do larger gigs in the future. Right now I need 2 duals, and I figured I might as well build 2 more while Im at it. To the builders that have built 4X cabs before, what is your best method of building? all 4 at the same time? 2 at a time, 1 at a time? Im doing 4 at a time and its taking me forever

I know you thought this over already but i'm curious, why 4 dual's instead of 8 singles ? If i had to build 4 cabs at the same time the most important thing would be time and space.I would do the build when i know i have time to work on it everyday to keep from dealing with large warped panels. If i had the space i would build all 4 at the same time.I say that because you have already built T-60's so you should be alright with the construction. If you are good at making jigs u can really knock them out fast.

@djtrumptight I went with duals because I can handle the extra size and weight. I build the singles and to me its not worth the extra build time and trips in and out of gigs. I plan to market myself to 500< person events, I have 6 DR200s. once I run all 4 I will swap them to 16 ohm loading, and run them all off one channel (or bridged) of an amp for rackspacing concerns. I really want to try to run 6 Dr200s, 4 T60s, and DJ monitors out of an 8u rack including processing. Kind of a pointless goal but Just a wow factor for the other tech's.

Anyways Day 1 progress- Kinda slow because I had to mark and cut out access panels on all 4 cabs. when building 2 or 1 it doesn't seem to take that long but 4 it just drags! After I got panel 1 and panel 2 cut out for all 4, installing became rather quick. Lay the pl, slap the panel in and shoot brad nails right in. then put panel 2 on and away you go. here are some pix.

Oh and I feel I should confess. I have sinned. With all of my cuts I have not been using guides with my circular saw. I just layed a line and cut along the side of it. I've been getting straight cuts with this method, much more efficient because I take extra caution, with the guide I get the occasional glide off the path or even put too much pressure and the guide slips a bit. Eventually I'll bite myself in the a$$, but that's why I bought an extra sheet of wood! XP Here's a sample of how straight I can freehand :fruit:

Maaaate buying 6 Drs and the kit for 4 Dual T60's, I thought the economy stateside wasn't too crash hot?? A good effort for a younger bloke  In like 12 months

You must have a sweet job and an abundance of disposable income. I miss those days, no dependants or mortgage :broke:

Have you been getting many gigs with your existing rig? Best of luck mate.

re: Cutting freehand - That's what P.L. is for right?
I've clamped my sled on either end, on every single cut on all 5 of my cabs, I love my kit too much to risk it.
At work I'll often ping a chalk line to cut down the finished height of a completed fence or gate but for cutting anything 'classy' I'll always use a straight edge for a guide, I've got from 600 up to 6000 these days and I wouldn't be without them for all the money in the world.
If you look along the edge of two completed decks, one cut on a drop saw and laid to a line, the other overlaid and cut off in one go in situ, the later always, always looks better :|
I digress..... Long day at work, so stoked to watch another mammoth build of T60's hope it all goes well, post rig sound check vids on completion for sure!

Its not that i have money, its that i spend it all on djing haha. Also spreading purchase over months helps a great deal. I will only be loading 2 for now. I get rehired most times because of my system tho!

Considering I had to route 16 holes, and epoxy down 64 t nuts I think I made a respectable amount of progress today. If anyone is looking to build t60s, I would opt for opening up the center and putting the jacks inside on the divider. On my previous ones I put them on the front and the back bottom corner, I just didn't like it that way for some reason. Im not sure if anyone knows it but neutrik sells combo jacks so you can plug 1/4 and speakon into the same jack, and it looks like a regular speakon. I think most amps have these, and I went and spent the extra $2 because it just gives more versatility.

No doubt Higz 8) Anybody that hears my rig walks off in disbelief at the quality and volume (magnitude, sheer presence) coming out of just 2 12's (sub 100hz) I just need to get out there a bit more.

So straight out of the build you'll be running

2 x 20 inch single lab 12 '60's
2 x 29 inch dual lab 12 '60's

That's four cabs, 6 drivers, plenty of VD for some thump. STOKED

Looking forward to watching the progress further.

re: Jack Placement, I definitely agree that running your jacks in the centre void is a capital idea, definitely proper functional when running multiple cabs. Ultra neat & importantly safe for the cables (punters with wandering hands and intoxicated feet)
Nice implementation, bring on the vids

My plan is to rob the drivers from the slims, and keep the boxes on standby in case i need thinner cabs
