Finishing cabs

#1 Post by Mnsouthpaw »

Greetings,
About to finish my first set of 24's and have a question about filler products. Duratex recommends drywall spackling to ensure good adhesion and not to use Bondo. The build plans suggest going with Bondo or PL Premium. While I used PL for the build it seems awkward as a filler. Any adhesion problems with Bondo....any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Marko

The main reason bondo is recommended is that it doesn't shrink. My experience with using PL to seal holes is that it bubbles some and may require some additional filling for a "perfect" result if you're not doing a textured finish.
So if it's not a large hole, one application of bondo does the job. Drywall spackle and many other fillers shrink some, and may mean another application to get it flat.

Most people do a primer/first coat in flat black on the cabs before Duratex, and by and large that leads to good results, and using less Duratex...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Hi Ryan,
Very sorry for the delay with pics, I've been have a heck of at time with my computer. About had it with this platform...might take a bite of the big Apple soon.

I'll try taking a different approach and see if I can't get something posted soon. My build is per plan, nothing out of the ordinary.

On latest builds, been using the new filler putty from Elmer's. Pro grade. Hardens in about 15 minutes. Sands real well. Very well. When done, the sanded portion looks just like wood and is hard as the wood.

First two cabinets have been sprayed professionally with Vortex. Hard shell but not slippery like Duratex, and not rock feeling like lineX. Its is hard though. I used Duratex in the handles area, and then they sprayed over it, just in case they couldn't reach in the insides of the handles. Have used Duratex many times with great results, just wanted something harder on these subs.

Here's a few pics of different angles with Vortex. Don't mind the "pinkish" color, that was from some uplighting we had on the walls in the area... FYI, if any of you are Packer fans, this wedding was actually at Lambeau Field. Two of 12 are built and finished, 2 more will be sprayed this week, then on to #5-#12.

sddj, is there any particular reason your subs are split apart?

See the sub placement sticky.

Because that's life. Not everything can be "ideal", as corner placement, boundary placement, etc. We have to roll the way we can.

I'm not asking about boundary loading, I am wondering about splitting your subs. Are you in a very small room? You do know you gain 6dB just by stacking 2 sub cabs together, but you create null zones and power alleys by splitting. I fully understand not always being able to boundary load, but why lose coupling gains? The exception would be in a really small room, as you would split the subs to try to even out response. I may be reading too much into the pictures you provided, but it appears like you have your subs split under your tops. If you don't, my bad.
