Template Template

#1 Post by tpgreen »

Sorry if this has already been posted, but here is a really simple way to build baffle templates.

Only requires routing a circle and cutting some straight edges, screwing them down and routing around them with a top bearing template bit. The inner material is easily removed by plunging the bit.

Once you remove the screws/wood you are left with the master jig.

Actually, I haven't seen a jig thread in a long time.. So this is great advice for new builders.. You do need to mention that you need a top bearing template bit for this to be possible :)

I do templates like this with a festool plunge saw and finish cuts with a jigsaw - gives perfect straight cuts aswell and is a bit faster than cutting out all those small pieces imo - but each to their own 8)

Good point about mentioning the top bearing template bit(just edited it). I had never owned/used a router before my first BFM build a few months ago.

I found I was way too unsteady with the jigsaw - hence straight edges/circle, which even a novice can conquer with the right tools. With a T55 plunge saw and Jasper Circle jig I can at least cut a straight line and circle.)

A template to make a template, that would be a meta-template :)
I like it. Thanks for sharing, tp.

Really like the concept!

You don't really NEED a top bearing bit. Just take a Forstner bit or something similar to drill 4 large holes; then flip the combo and route from the other side.

Top bearing bits seem to be virtually non-existing over here. I've seen them in distributor catalogs but never in retail.
In build order:
O12 with no tweeter.
3 x WedgeHorns.
2 x Jack 10 without tweeters.
2 x DR250.
2 x 16" T39
1 x Tuba 24
2 x SLA Pro (sort of...)

I have a bottom bearing bit which mean my template is strapped to the bottom of whatever I'm cutting out. Might look for a top bearing bit.

I shop all my router bits at something called Wealden Tools in UK - they have an online shop and ship extremely fast all over europe.. Router bits are top top quality and the price is not too bad..

Might be a good tip for other builders in europe/UK :)

That's how I did the WH8 baffles, except I used a bottom bearing bit with the template underneath and hogged out the majority of the material first with a sabre saw. The router bit just trims away the last remaining bit of wood and finishes off the cutouts.
Built
T48s
WH8s
SX212
