Fill My Shop

#1 Post by MDW »

Here's the challenge: I want to fill my shop with quality sound.
The shop is 50ft X 50ft with 20ft ceiling. It's all metal so the acoustics are going to be bad.
The shop is square so placement is a concern. Should I hang them? Also they will not be moved so weight and size are not an issue.
I can go as big as we need to. It seems to me that most of the the builds are about weight and mobility. Does the fact that this will not be moved change the material choices? ie: 3/4" over 1/2"?
I can fabricate anything. I have tablesaws, drill presses, belts sanders, compound miter saws, etc... so wood is not a problem.
I even have metal capabilites, Plasma cutters, welders (mig, tig, stick), Bridgeport mill, lathes, etc...
The problem is I don't understand all the acronym's and jargon being used on here. Am I screwed?
I have not bought anything as I wanted to start with a clean slate based on suggestions from here.
Now for the wants: I want this place to ROCK. I listen to 60's, 70's 80's stuff.
Led Zepplin, Edgar Winter, Doobies, AC/DC, etc.. I like bass but I don't like boom, does that make sense?
When the drummer hits the snare I want to FEEL it.
Now I'm not saying money is no object but I have a few bucks to work with.
I just don't like buying store bought stuff, I prefer to make my own as it seems so do you :)

What ya got? I'm your puppet :)

Sounds like a real accoustical challenge for it to sound good all over. 50' square rooms aren't too friendly to sub frequencies. Some of the guys on here are very knowledgable about that stuff and will help you out with placement. A plan of the room and where in the room you'd like the premium sound would help.

t48's, 30-36" wide, 3015lf loaded. Qty 2. Corner loaded. Otop12's or DR250's hung on one wall, preferably one of the walls the t48's are corner loaded. Qty 2 or 4. You don't need 4 for the volume, but for the control the line array effect will give you on reflections it would be beneficial.

Or Tlah Pro for a longer line array.

Unfortunately without some sound treatment ringing and nodes are unavoidable.

Now we get to see if I'm :owned: by the boss.

How to describe the shop?
The shop is actually 50ft X 100ft X 20ft tall.
The first floor is 50 X 100 completely open front to back.
The second floor is 50ft X 50ft X 10ft. It removes 25% of the upper volume.
Does that make sense? I don't know how to draw and post it in here.
The only part I'm interested in filling is the back. 50 x 50 x 20.
As far as where in the room? The center?
I can hang them, mount them, whatever needs to be done.
Angled up, down, sideways. Anything.

I'm very excited about this project.
I hope you will help me.

You're gonna get more help than you need in the next few hours, it'll make your head spin. That extra 50 foot recess makes all the difference. I'm southern hemisphere so we do ground floor then "first" floor. I think you mean the room in question is ground level and 100 x 50 and half of it is 20 ft ceiling the other half is 10ft because it has a 1st floor room over it?

Does he need T48 extension for the Doobies?

Hell yeah. If you got the room and the capabilities, go big.
Another couple of sheets of plywood to max out a t48: priceless.

The "ground" floor is 50x100. Half of it is 10ft ceiling height and half is 20ft ceiling height. It's the 50 X 50 X 20ft height that I'm wanting to fill.

Is there a wall between the two parts? You may only want to have half of it usable but the rest will affect the acoustics as well, if it's open.
99% of the time, things that aren't already being done aren't being done because they don't work. The other 1% is split evenly between fools and geniuses.

Hi Michael! Welcome to the forum! There are many here who didn't know the terminology either, but as time passes........ And there are many here willing to give you friendly advice. :)
I think TLAH hung up will do you well, and may even cover the upper "room". The TLAH will help in overcoming the reverb. And add a T48 or two. The subs that Bill designed are all about clarity and efficiency, not the nasty 'boom'. It's a genuine bass sound reaching nice and deep.

I appreciate the help.
I know this is not the perfect setting but I'm just trying to do the best we can.
We like to jam while we work.
We are also installing a projector for TV :)
I'm working on a pic.
I didn't want to post one because the shop is a mess.
I'm embarrassed to have you see it but I will anyway as it will help with designs.

I ordered the entire CD from Bill so I would have all the designs to choose from and to support this site.

Thanks again for the help.
Technically Challenged, Michael.

Oh oh oh oh, i know i know, do the Tuba Home theater(or THT  )!!!. That will cover the music part and the is the cab that has the lowest extension out of ALL the plans for that movie watching experience. If you need more spl, you can just add another cab, however, if you start with another cab that does not give the extension you cannot just "add another" to make it go lower, so start with the THT as wide as possible.

Even though the plans say 36" is the max, be a rebel and do the 37" :fruit:

just kidding, but serioulsy, build the tht :)
Built:6 t39, t18, 4 Jack10, 2 autotuba, 2 SLA,2 wedge, 2 TT, 2 Tritrix, curved sla, 2 otop212, 2 SLA pros, Ported 8" sub, 2 ported 210, dual ported 8" sub

A pair of THT's with the Dayton 15" drivers should take care of it if you're going to be watching movies.

Assuming this space is very reverberant you want the highest possible set of mains. That would be TLAH Pro, which would be a lot easier build than three or four DR200 or OTop 12 to get the same height.
