Jack 10 & TAT for bass rig

#1 Post by gosthrider »

Hi there!

I use 2 jack 10 + a TAT for my bass rig. It may be a strange setup, but I did it on purpose:
- I need something modular
- Enough power to cover small gig
- able to handle the growling thunder of a BEADG or F#BEAD bass !

Modularity:
The key here is the amp, it have a switchable low pass active filter. So I can have 150 / 300 watts full range or 300 watts with sub ON.
It enable me to play home with just one Jack for practice (fullrange 150watts), then take it back with the amp where we play altogether to have the full stack of Jacks & TAT ready for rumble ! It's a money saver as I don't need something else to play at home.

sound:
Just for comparison, I was playing a 250 watts Marshall cab with a 15" driver before. The new rig work so much better !
Before I was spending so much time trying to find the good setup to avoid the 15" reaching his limit, the rest of the band ended every time looking for me like " Hey I can't hear you !" No joking I was obliged to reduce low frequencies to take easy on the driver !!
After a looooong tone test of all the drivers I Installed my new rig in the studio where we play and decided to go big:
after all it was time to hear if it actually work.

So I plugged my 5 strings in the amp, turn everything at max, and slap the hell out of the B string.... Oh boy I gain some respect here ! 8)
The drummer & guitarist were literally blown away !!
The sound is clear, powerful & earthshaking !!! I really love when I feel the vibrations of my bass. That's why I wanted a sub, I want to feel the bass ! But most important now, the rest of the band can feel it as well.
What's funny is that the guys told me to turn down the volume. We spend a couple of hours playing some of our tracks, and it just sounded right. what a relief !
There is not so much to say but:

It's so cool when you can tune your sound the way you want, not the way you have to because of a bad cab.

That sounds great. I would have thought that the TAT would not keep up with two Jacks, but if it's working, it's working. I'd love to see some pictures of your setup.

Damn! I knew I forgot something... :wall:

Here is a picture. That's cool because the TAT is exactly the same size as a Jack 10, I juste made it a few inch wider to get at 16".

I use one 10" Daytona DCS 255, as recommended in the plans. It was quite hard to find but I finally found it in a german online shop.

The 2 jacks are loaded with the deltaII 2510. At first I wanted to put the beta 10 inside since the heavy bass are dealed by the TAT, but I was afraid that it wasn't gonna sound good when I play fullrange at home without the TAT. :conf:

Interesting

What amp are you using? From the pic it looks like one of those 3 channel models with built in crossover..?

2x Otop 12 J-Array 3012HO Melded

Building:

Exactly, 1 sub channel with active filter until 120 Hz, then 2 channels in parallel mode for both J110

Nice job, I'd considered the same thing. You made a great choice with the 2510's, significant improvement over the beta 10 IME.

I was considering this setup (except Jack 210 + TAT) for my Bass. However I was put off by someone on bfm forum saying it
would not be any good.
Would you recommend this setup?
Can you hear/ feel the sub and does it project enough for the audience?
Sorry so many questions but you`ve got me thinking about this big time.
Thanks Andy

I have a similarly potent overachiever sub with gto1014d. It can't keep up with DR250, but the rig carries medium volume bar gigs. A DR250 at war volume is not appropriate anyway!

A T39 is a better choice if you can cart it. One J10 is all you'll need for a top. So long as your placement is good you get the height advantage, and halfway to a bigboy PA.
BAT10, Bad Auto Tuba. Reverse folded TAT to fit JBL 1014D, 350W driver, voltage limit unknown.

To big for me to carry however a TAT would be?
I really am considering trying this to settle my own mind.
