Couple of T60's and some videos at the end.

#1 Post by Ian Westwood »

Hello all, I have been a bit quiet recently.

Here is the build thread for a couple of T60's I built for a customer, who also happens to be a good friend.

Later we added more T60's and threw a desert party on some private land for about 100 people.... just to see if we could pull it off.

We are stoked on the results, and have been asked to do audio at more desert parties! Wooooo! Excellent fun.

Both sides marked out.

So we decide to take the wives, drive off road as far as we can and see what noise we can make with 2 T60's

Wives supplied beer and entertainment.
Image

White truck had the generator and all the racks. Ended up using the silver truck as a speaker stand as the ones my friend purchased broke on first use.
Image

Tweaking away on the drive rack. We had the T60's pretty close already.
Image

Happy man. Sounds great.
Image

We didn't end up doing much tweaking, and danced a little as the sunset.
Image

The smaller subs you see are Turbo Sound TCX-18B. We delayed them by 12.3ms along with the tops and they actually played pretty well. Just in the interests of science you understand.

I took several videos during this test but all the audio sounds like ass. Either total distortion (we were pushing into the 50 volt range so the phone mic distorted) or fubared because it was really windy.

So then we held our first private desert party. I was terrified. I have spent years talking shit about other sound systems and all of a sudden my number was up!

We pooled resources and managed to scrape together 5 T60's. The pretty white ones belong to a friend of mine. They were never meant to be moved and are part of his living room system. I need to apologize for the dings and grubby finger prints they collected!

Did someone order some bass?
Image

The plan was to eq so it was totally flat to 25 Hz and we told all the DJ's to bring their badest tracks. We had 20 DJ's or so from around socal.

We set everything up so it would be impossible to blow the drivers. The T60's were limited to 30 volts and everything else was well within its capabilities.

Actually the T60's only hit 30 volts down at about 25 to 30 Hz. Most of the time they were cruising at about 14 volts.

We had plenty of volume but not enough that people felt the need to wear ear plugs. I can't understand why you'd go to the trouble of building a system and them make it painful to stand in front of.

I re-purposed my track saw table into a DJ table. And made sure it didn't touch any of the T60's.

The tops are Turbo Sound TCX-15. Ultimately we are going to replace them with a load of DR280's

Image

So here is a video another friend of mine took. Note you can actually hear conversations as he moves around, and the camera mic was not over whelmed!

I couldn't be happier with the results.

Awesome stuff Ian

Great clean build on those T60's of yours.
Love that FESTOOL. I don't know how I could build cabs without mine anymore.

Stupidly clean build, absolutely gorgeous. Do I spy the shop soundsystem in the back of the second pic? Also your friend's white T60s look great, the coloured mouth really makes them pop though no horizontal brace??

in home use... doubt they have many people standing on them. also looks like they have the horizontal braces farther down the horn, just not in the very mouth.

V. Jealous... not so much of the beautiful tubas you have created immaculately, but of that space in the desert for a party. Here in the uk it is so hard to find a spot which is just a mile away from any house. Looks like you are miles from anywhere there... and i bet you get nice weather as well just to really rub it in!!! :)
