Pyle made a horn?

#1 Post by bassmonster »

I found this on Google Images while Googling pictures of folded horns.

Sort of looks like a Jack Lite, except for the tweeter array or comp horn.

http://www.pyleaudio.com/sku/PPM501

It's advertised as a "midrange stage enclosure". It's made out of MDF and weighs 123 pounds!

Here's the spec sheet.

Heavy Duty MDF Construction w/Reinforced Corners
Durable Black Splatter Paint Finish
15'' Driver 2.5'' Kapton VC
Magnet Weight: 90 oz
Ported Enclosure for Added Response
Steel Recessed Handles for Easy Portability
Dual Speakon & Dual 1/4'' Jacks
Binding Post Terminals
Built In Crossover Network 1KHz-5kHz
Power Handling: 250 Watts RMS/500 Watts Peak
Frequency Response: 200-2500Hz
Sensitivity (1w/1m): 105 dB
Impedance: 8 Ohms
Dimensions: 33''W x 25.6''D x 24.2''H
Weight: 123 lbs

The specs are surely inflated. How do y'all think the performance would be on it? At a MSRP at over $500, the Jack Lite is still a far better deal and has much better performance, durability, and value. Plus, the Pyle has no woofer spec sheet, or SPL chart, which makes it an unknown quantity.

It's a "knockoff"

Pyle doesn't make anything, they source it all. That cab is a rough copy of a 40 year old JBL design.

Thanks Bill and Sydney. Could it be a knockoff of the JBL 4560?

Front loaded horns go back to the 1930's - So there are a lot of variations that include a slot port on the front, like the Altec Lansing 816 and 817

I used to have a system back in the 80's that used the JBL 12" mid horn and 4560s. It sucked, though I didn't know it at the time.

Does anyone remember the model number of the JBL version of that cab?
Omni 10
Omni 10.5
OmniTop 12 x 4
Wedgehorn 8 x 3
XF212
T39 @ 18" x 2
T39 @ 20" x 2
T39 @ 28" x 2
Jack 110 x 5
Jack Lite 12
XF210
XF210 (Slant only, no crossfire)

It's a very common design. I made some visually identical to the Pyle in 1970.
