DR300/Omni 10.5

#1 Post by Alan Star »

Originally we chose the dr300 to use with our lab subs, some of you may remember fotos of stands I built for them. This worked fairly well and was certainly loud but there were a few things that made me decide to go this new way. Firstly, it was a lot of weight to get up high (the dr300's) and time setting the stands up and packing them down again, also my usual application really wanted wider dispersion rather than narrow, and lastly, I really just like the sound of the Omni 10.5 in the upper mid range and treble. I imagine the OT12 or Jack 10 would sound similar but I already had one pair of 10.5's built so I decided to build another pair.

Anyway's I have to say, i'm really happy with this current set up, have had it out a couple times now, and really like the way it sounds and have had a lot of positive feedback about it. The dr's absolutely kick in the low mids and are a great match for the labs at 80hz, I cross them at 250hz over to the Omni's which play really loud and clear not having to deal with the low mids, they have a really nice crispness to the top end and a nice warm tone in the vocals/upper midrange. I will say that this set up is particularly good for electronic dance music as there is a lot of low midbass and I think it works well to have dedicated low mids/high mids for this type of music. For other types of music you perhaps don't really want to have dedicated low mids, or in the case of a concert/stadium set up, where you want narrow dispersion, would use the dr300 as intended with a good compression driver. I have left the comp drivers in mine but have just blocked off the front as you can see in the foto.

My rack set up is a deq2496 for eq and compression.

I bet that you'd have found the DR280 with melded arrays to your liking. Almost as much midbass as the DR300, but with the high end clarity and dispersion you like from the 10.5s.
Nice Golden Arches. You make Big Macs with 'Roo meat? Or Croc?

I imagine, if starting from scratch, the dr280 would have been a really good option. Thanks again Bill for these great designs and all your help. Thanks a lot also to everyone else on the forum who have helped me out along the way.

Unfortunately, Macca's doesn't offer either roo or croc on their menu here. :(

Not officially. They don't have horse meat on the menu here, but the last quarter-pounder I ate had whip marks where the jockey hit it. :cowboy:

This foto is from a party some friends of mine organised, they called it McDoof, they did the stage set up, I think they found the golden arches on ebay.

Man, great looking setup.

I've got a hi school friend who moved to Melbourne for uni, and she's all about a good doof party. Hell, within the next couple upgrades you make to your system, she might as well be able to hear it all the way from perth :chainsaw: :chainsaw: :chainsaw: !!!!

While looking at the first pic my thoughts were: that's about a full container of cabs if you'd get that lot shipped. Good for you to be able to order a CD from the US and build locally.

Then by the end I see you own the DR300's built by Bill himself. That must have cost a small fortune to get shipped to the other end of the world :broke: . Good gracious

Very nice system. I would almost be able to hear it from here if you turn it up 8)

Love it. How do you like the LABs? Were they hard on drivers at first?
Would love to hear that setup. Unfortunately I am about 100,000 air miles away.

I like the labs a lot, big and heavy, and that's how they sound as well. Unfortunately all the Omni's got stolen out of my shed recently. Kind of ironic, I had just got the system sounding the way i was happy with it and ... cest la vie, time for a change for me anyway I think. Thanks again everyone all for your help over the years.

man, really sorry to hear that... i cant imagine what I would do if someone stole parts of my rig.. or my guitars... or any of my instruments really. Hope you find a way to recoup the loss.... thankfully those tops had value due to their performance, not the actual cost of the unit. Would hate to have seen some 1500 dollar tops get stolen weeks after you buy them.

:cussing:

But it won't be all that difficult to identify the 10.5s by sight, making odds of recovery far better than if they were Mackies etc. And then you can treat the offending wankers to a different kind of rave.
