Duratex on Melamine?

#1 Post by David Carter »

Before I get into cleaning up the garage after several months of cab building, I decided it was time to finally build a V-plate for my T39's. The only piece of wood I have that's big enough is a piece of 3/4" white melamine-coated particle board. It's the stuff they sell for making shelves, etc.

I've already cut the V-plate to size, but now my question is whether or not I should put a coat of Duratex on it. I'd like it to be black to match the cabs and to give a protective coating to the edges that don't have the melamine on them, but I don't know whether the Duratex will stick to the melamine or not. I tried going over it with my orbital sander and a 60-grit disc to roughen up the surface, but it didn't do anything to the melamine coating.

What do you guys think?
Dave

Built:
- Omni 10 (S2010 + piezo array)
- 2 x DR250 (DL II 2510 + melded array)
- 2 x Titan 39 (BP102 - 14"W)
- 2 x Titan 39 (3012LF - 20"W)
- 4 x DR200 (Delta Pro 8B + melded array)

Black latex? I've got plenty left from the gallon I used on the cabs.

Melamine isn't quite teflon, but it's close, not much will stick to it.

Melamine usually has particle board as a backer. That makes it both heavy and not very strong. Plus, you'll cut your fingers on the edges sooner or later. Get a sheet of 9/8" flooring plywood and cut the plate from that. It's lightweight and strong enough to stand on. Round over the edges, fill the big knots, and then finish it with Duratex.

I use a belt sander over formica covered panels, you need to peel all corners about 1 inch from the border and the rest try to get out 40 to 50% of the melamine over all the panel if you wanna be sure that the duratex sticks you can also throw a very small cap of contact cemment or perhaps prime and sand
There is a very thin line between fail and success. It is very thin so, why are you scared???

You can prime glazed ceramic tile with this stuff. Sand it all with 100g so there's some tooth, prime with this.

How will you ensure it is strong enough?
I had to use 1 inch ply with reinforcing and it still flexes when people stand on it!

I don't do any events where people are likely to stand on it. If I ever think that will be an issue, I'll do a second v-plate and double them up.

I'd prefer it that way too. Eliminating risk is better than reducing it.

Bought a quart of this stuff yesterday at Lowe's. As soon as I get a chance, I'll slap it on, and see how well it does. :fingers:

It's advertised as being tintable, so I asked the guy at the paint counter to tint it black for me, but after talking to him about what I was going to be using it for, I decided to leave it white because he said that the more tinting he put in it, the less it would stick to the melamine. If that's true, I'm glad he asked what I was using it for before he added the tint.

Well ventilated area. It flashes off really fast, has some very potent stuff in it that makes it adhere to just about anything.
