External passive crossver build

#1 Post by Harley »

Here're photos of my external passive crossover build for our group's T39s.

Image

Box made, coil and caps soldered and installed ( coil screwed down, caps PL glued ) and 2 Speakons with 1+1- and 1 Speakon 2+2- with tails soldered ready to put in place

Image

Speakons screwed into place making sure the latch on the plug will be at the top.

Image

All wired up, ready to go. The Input is on the right, sub at the end and 2+2- top connection on the left.

Now, I would post a picture of the lid I made but I have a question of Bill first "Is it necessary to provide some ventilation in this box in the way of a a grille or holes in the lid?"

The coil will dissipate some heat, but not a lot. I doubt venting is necessary.

No soldering????(other than whats stated)
What are those clips?

and why? If you don't mind me asking, Isn't just more to lug around vs having it all ready in the cab?

Not downing it just wondering, looks good.

The external crossover makes it easier to bi-amp or use the passive crossover.
Done inside the cab, this becomes more tricky... switch required, more wires.

Harley's box concept can also be applied to a series-wiring box.
One input, two outputs wired in series. Both outputs must be connected for it to work.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.

They are just standard "electrical connector blocks" and "connector terminals"

The connector terminals ( lower left hand side of the assembled pic ) are especially handy when you have to connect more than one wire together.

I made my daughter marry an electrician so I could get these readily and at a good price

Just speak to your local sparkie - he's bound to have a heap of them.

Ebay. I bought a couple of hundred about a year ago for $5.

I had done something similar for mine last year.
Image

The input is on the left on a 2 pole Speakon
The output is done on a 4 pole Speakon. With two cables then going out of the Output Speakon connector to their respective cab.
-1+1 }===============================D=: Male Speakon 4 on the -1+1 poles
-2+2 }===============================D=: Male Speakon 2 (on the existing poles)

The Otop has a 2 pole Speakon socket, so it can only get the full range signal or the HF part
The T39 has a 4 pole Speakon socket (driver connected to -1/+1), it can get anything.

Because I don't trust myself, I made it foolproof...

Image

I put the connectors on one side only so that the XOver box sits nicely at the back of the amp.
I drilled some holes for ventilation, just in case.
I forgot to paint it ;)

Pardon my :noob: This Passive crossover will only work with the necessary number of subs that give the required resistance correct? May I ask for a BOM used in the crossover? Thanks!
