TLAH - First Real Listen

#1 Post by djohnson573 »

I completed my TLAHs a few weekends ago, but really hadn’t had a chance to give them a critical listen. I’ve played around with the EQ a little and adjusted the sub balance, but mostly the kids have been listening to them. A couple of evenings ago a storm took out our telephone/internet/cable TV, so I decided to take the opportunity to give them a real listen.

First, let me point out that I’m not an audio engineer, FOH sound specialist, or any other type of sound expert. I’m just a guy with above average woodworking skill who is having fun building speakers and has enjoyed playing and listening to music all his life. So, I set a comfortable chair in the middle if the room, poured myself a cocktail, turned down the lights, and popped in Joni Mitchell – Blue.

From the opening track until the end of the CD, I was transported to a world where Joni was setting in my living room and playing a private concert for me. The incredible clarity of the vocals, dulcimer, guitars and piano produced a level of detail I could not remember hearing before on this recording. Without knowing the proper audio terminology, the best way as I can describe it is that I could close my eyes and precisely locate the individual guitar strings on the stage and even see the hammers striking the piano strings. It was a wonderful 36 minute experience that reminded me how much I enjoy listening to an incredible performance on a system where you can forget it is recorded.

I know the TLAH was designed for home theater, but it may cause you to pull out all those old recorded favorites and give them another listen. :D Thanks Bill!

Great! can't wait to build mine.

Ah, also we need details. Where those 4 39's you built plugged in? And how much did you drink?

What do you have for stereo components?
Drumming is a way of life.

My stereo/HT rig is modest to say the least. All my money goes towards my DJ gear. Components are a Sony STR-DE985 receiver and a Sony SA-WM40 sub. Someday I will build the TT, but it is about 3rd down on my list.

T39s not plugged in. The point of the TLAH was to keep the kids from using my pro gear when they want to listen to music.

How much should I drink? I built the 8 ohm version. I guess if you go with the 4 ohm version you can drink twice as much.

I'm considering a set of these for music and movies as well. Nice to hear they will do both quite well.
