First, let me point out that I’m not an audio engineer, FOH sound specialist, or any other type of sound expert. I’m just a guy with above average woodworking skill who is having fun building speakers and has enjoyed playing and listening to music all his life. So, I set a comfortable chair in the middle if the room, poured myself a cocktail, turned down the lights, and popped in Joni Mitchell – Blue.
From the opening track until the end of the CD, I was transported to a world where Joni was setting in my living room and playing a private concert for me. The incredible clarity of the vocals, dulcimer, guitars and piano produced a level of detail I could not remember hearing before on this recording. Without knowing the proper audio terminology, the best way as I can describe it is that I could close my eyes and precisely locate the individual guitar strings on the stage and even see the hammers striking the piano strings. It was a wonderful 36 minute experience that reminded me how much I enjoy listening to an incredible performance on a system where you can forget it is recorded.
I know the TLAH was designed for home theater, but it may cause you to pull out all those old recorded favorites and give them another listen.
