OmniTop 12 ready to go to work
Re: OmniTop 12 ready to go to work
Thanks, and yours look great too! Very professional. I assume you made frames for the grills, since your materials are all cloth?
The grills on mine are the 8mm hole version of the product you linked.

Re: OmniTop 12 ready to go to work
I have been buying preformed metal speaker grilles from a guy who sells thru ebay under the user spkrparts!-2007. He will custom size them and post them with a pre agreed upon "buy it now" price for you. You contact him through another one of his listings.
The grilles he has made have been right on the money for sizing, and fit my inevitably odd sized cabinets (I'm not a perfect carpenter by any means
) But with a carpet finish I have been able to press fit the grilles and they fit snug, and stay on fine without screws, or rattles. He packs them exceptionally well and they have arrived undented and unbent.
I would recommend him to anyone whose cabs all come out sized slightly differently - like mine.
Cheers,
Pete J

Exactly. Wasn't too hard, either. Just re-traced the arch 4 times, 1" apart, from the bottom panel (looked like a rainbow), cut out and screwed in.I assume you made frames for the grills, since your materials are all cloth?
How much of a difference is there in sound between the 6mm and the 8mm grill? The grills on mine are the 8mm hole version of the product you linked.

I have absofreakinlutely no idea. Bigger holes seemed like a better choice for the tweets.DJDAVE wrote: How much of a difference is there in sound between the 6mm and the 8mm grill?

Air space percentage is what counts the most.Tim A wrote:I have absofreakinlutely no idea. Bigger holes seemed like a better choice for the tweets.DJDAVE wrote: How much of a difference is there in sound between the 6mm and the 8mm grill?

Re: OmniTop 12 ready to go to work
The metal left around the 8mm holes looks larger than on the 6mm, but for the life of me I can't find any info on percent air space.
Re: OmniTop 12 ready to go to work
I use this page to get a good idea of percent open area for a large assortment of grill sizes. It doesn't have metric sizes though.gdougherty wrote:but for the life of me I can't find any info on percent air space.
If the grill covers the complete front of a cab, I don't think the different percentages are a concern. The reason being the front of the cab area is so much larger than the slot or driver cone.

Re: OmniTop 12 ready to go to work
I totally agree. I though about that, too.the curved grill looks nice... for a few cabs that may be ok, but for someone like myself I am more worried about how well they pack. Rectangles pack much easier..

By the way, on the left of the OT12's is my Omni15 Sub.

Are there handles anywhere on these? Maybe the back?
Thanks,
Wes

Exactly! Using the ports as handles because it was easy & cheap... I mean free. Are there handles anywhere on these? Maybe the back?
I actually may end up putting handles on these (when I get some time away from finishing my 2 tuba-24's), because they don't carry very easily, as I found out.

I really like the look of these! was it your idea to curve them or is that option in the plans? Wow how cool those look all grilled out

Thanks. The curve isn't in the plans, it's just something I wanted to try, which is what I love about DIY. Any questions on what I did is in this thread. If its confusing, let me know and I'll help out best I can. But the first step is to buy the plans. It's worth it!!!I really like the look of these! was it your idea to curve them or is that option in the plans? Wow how cool those look all grilled out

The curve is functional, adding length to the horn, which extends the region of horn loading a bit lower. It doesn't do a lot, but it does do something, so it's more than just a cosmetic mod.DJDAVE wrote:Thanks. Yeah I've had the plans for a while now but just never got started. I'm gonna have to get busy!

Have you thought about documenting the curved front and including it as an option in the plans? Just out of curiosity.
