Omni 15 review - finally!

#1 Post by Dan_S »

Ok, I built this Omni 15 back in the latter 2 weeks of August...apologies for taking so long to write a review!

The sound of this cab is very broad, but even. I have to be careful not to over-cook the mids as the Alpha 8MR is quite sensitive - I hate to think how sensitive the HF drivers would be if I'd included them!

It's a very efficient cab too, and made me realise even more that the Peavey head I use at the moment is unsuitable for my playing. I found this by running my Bass through a simple PA amp made by Torque (roughly half the power handling), and preferred THAT sound.

I'm still getting used to its accuracy as I've noticed a little less performance at a particular range (low A to C#), but I expect it to be how I've set the amps up so far. The cab fills every room I've used it in, and in all honesty I think it's more than I need for a lot of stuff, and could probably easily get away with an Omni 12!

Someone offered me some free 1/2" MDF, so I couldn't look a gift horse in the mouth when I had the chance. Unfortunately that's made the cab quite heavy, but with a trolley or two people it's easy to lug around.

I can't wait to hear what a professionally made one sounds like!

They are great cabs.

I think you will find a Pro made one will sound identical. It may just look a little better :D (not that there is anything wrong with yours of course!)

I noticed that you only have around six screws holding the rear access panel in place. I may be tempted to install a few more.

There should be 2 screws either side of the rear access panel too - the problem was I didn't have bolts long enough to get through to the pronged T-nuts. I was going to sort them out, but er, forgot :)

I can't say as I've noticed much leakage though - the weather stripping that the access panel sits on seems to seal very well. But yes, more screws would be advised!
