I understand about for-hire gigs, for your band you might be able to use wired IEM's, which can be done on the cheap as the good wireless systems cost a lot.DAVID_L_PERRY wrote:I aint about to fork out for 3 wireless sets of in ears.....

Which earbuds did you get, what is the model? I thought about using a headphone amp, Behringer makes a reasonably priced unit.....but I don't think it's needed with the 01V, the aux outs alone have plenty of volume without being excessive enough to blow earbuds or eardrums.David Luscombe wrote:Hi
thats what we did and it worked great the only difference was that we used sony or seinhiesser ear pieces that are about the same price and sound WAY better and stay in your ears better
and we also used a high powered set of headphone amps. with individual levels

regarding hard wired in ears:-
I have already done this in the past two different ways.
The first was a hard wired belt pack with built in pre-amp fed from its own Aux channel that the drummer used (I still have it somewhere)
The second was to use a tiny little behringer mixer sat next to the drummer who just plugs into the headphones out. The monitor Aux feed channel from the FOH desk goes into a channel input on the little desk and the drummer then has complete control over his own level and eq. Worked a treat and was very cheap.
Wired in ears would not work for myself or the other guitar fellas as we tend to go walkabout

Problem with in-ears either wired or wireless in for-hire setups IMO is the headphones. Sharing headphones out among musicians caries a certain ick factor, and not that many people cart their own along with them. You have to be able to relay this info to all people you work with ahead of time and if someone forgets, they're SOL. The little earbud types hurt mine and other people's ears after a time plus have a tendency to fall out, so keeping a handful around won't work for everyone, and the in-ear type (like the UE's I own and absolutely love) aren't exactly cost effective.
For small bands, the cost isn't that bad, but I regularly work with a group that has up to 17 people on stage at one time (think Gloria Estephan). Sure, it's only about 2-grand for a pair of dual channel setups from Shure to get me 4 monitor mixes, but then I need another 15 body packs at about $300/ea. Yeowch.

I personally do not like IEMs. Our lead vocalist uses them. He has one of the more expensive Shure wireless sets. One thing he did that improved the performance significantly was to have a set of the earpieces/inserts made and fit to his ear canal by an otologist (that's an ear doctor for the drummers out there
). No more worries about them slipping out in the middle of a performance. Generally, he only uses one ear at a time to avoid fatigue aand allow for better on-stage communication. I think he said he paid around $150/pr for the custom earpieces. They've lasted him over 18 months.

I'm not a musician, but I play one in a band.
The whole point in IEM and custom molds is to cut down the sound level the ear is subjected to. By only using on ear piece at a time you have this little sound canon pointed right at your ear drum that has to over come the stage sound level. If you need to improve on stage communication , wire an ambience mic that just goes to the IEMs possibley with foot switch if it just needed between songs.

Back on track.
We played a small benefit tonight using my BFM system. Omnitops and T-48's. What a gig! I have never encountered a reaction like we received. The system was utterly devasating.
I'll put one up pic now and add to this later since I need some sleep.

Will add to this tomorrow.

The show was quite a sucess. We raised over $2000 for a good cause and got a couple more gigs out of it. Definatly got our name out there. The crowd there last night was completely insane. We did 3 encores and they still wanted more but it was getting past 2:30 and the owner turned the ugly lights on.
I had a former guitarist in a previous band run sound for us. He is currently the full time soundman for another band. He was tremendously impressed with my system and is considering quiting them and coming over to us.
Standing on the stage I could just feel the power and response while playing. I just know it sounded great and the crowds response showed it. I didn't hear one negative comment and thats saying something for this area. Also not one second of feedback and we were freakin LOUD.
After the gig, the owner told us we sounded excellent and gave us each $50. ( This was supposed to be a freebie.) Her opinion holds alot of weight with me as she is usually quite stoic and overly critical. I've seen some damn good bands in her place as well.
Overall I couldn't be happier with this system. The only thing I would do is add more cabs/amps for outdoor gigs. Well... maybe some straight arrays in the top cabs for better high end over distance. This PA is simple, lightweight and took a grand total of 15 minutes to setup from the trailer to playing a CD.

Behringer DCX crossover, DEQ2496 and the 24 channel Behringer mixer. I got the mixer B-stock for $500 as I didn't have alot of money but I am happy with it.

Two T-48's V-plated thump really hard. The only way I could see using 4 right now is outdoors or a huge room.
An interesting note. The soundman the other night had a hard time wrapping his head around what these speakers can do. He had the kick drum down in the mix initially during sound check. I noticed the light meters on the PLX1202 barely lighting up and I told him to go ahead and boost the kick. He said, "Yeah, could use some more chest thump." He knew I was using two 15's and the knew the specs of the sub amp and I think he was afraid he would blow something.
