Snake Rebuild Project

#1 Post by Bruce Weldy »

Bought a PA from a defunct band a while back and sold off everything I didn't want. Ended up with a 25 year old Rapco snake that's been laying around on the garage floor for well over a year now. Decided it was time to make it viable again.

The box looks pretty bad, but all of the connectors are fine and the inside is still in good shape, however, the fan out was horrendous. The wires were tangled and beat all to hell. Lots of cuts in the heat shrink that left wires exposed. So, obviously the old wire had to go. The old Switchcraft XLRs showed their age but probably could have been reused.....but, I'd rather just solder on a new Neutrik connector than to have to de-solder and re-solder the old Switchcraft.

The snake was originally in a 24 x 3 configuration with the 3 returns having paralleled XLR and 1/4" jacks. There was a spare pair in the snake that wasn't being used....not unusual back then for there to be a spare inside.

The plan was to add more returns, so I re-configured it as a 22 x 6. However I paralleled return 5 and 6 to channel 23 and 24 - so, with just a gender changer on the fan end (or change out the connectors), you can make it a 24 x 4.....that's mostly in case I decide to sell it at some point - a 22 x 6 might confuse the neophytes.

First, I ordered all the parts....connectors, heat shrink, and a new cable bale. That a new term for ya'? That's the hanger or strain relief that is on most every snake at the fan end.

Here's the progression.....

Cut the snake to make a clean start using a hack saw.....way easier and cleaner than trying to chew away at it with side-cutters.

Got it all stripped back and slid on the new cable bale and the heat shrink for later.

Half of the pairs have the heat shrink applied......I typically buy 4 foot lengths of heat shrink, but since I need so much, I bought a 100 roll on Amazon for about 17 bucks shipped to my door.

All of the pairs are complete now.

To continue....

Next up was adding the colored ends, then applying a number on each cable with a label maker, then covering that with a two inch piece of clear heat shrink.

Then, just added all the connectors and tested.

On the box, I used my punch to enlarge the hole left by the 1/4" jacks and added the XLRs for the additional returns....

Anyway.....it was something to do. Cost about $150 total to do the remodel on this old snake....

Now I have a spare and it's a hundred footer and my regular is only 75....so, more options.

Nice little project Bruce.

I would have done the same as I'm not a fan of Switchcrafts for mobile use. Having to find a screwdriver, tiny set screws and dark stages make them a pain to field check the connections.
Built:
17" width 10" driver Autotuba
2 x 29" width dual Lab12 Tuba60
6 x DR250 2510/asd1001
In progress:
2 x DR250 2510/asd1001
For best results, point the loud end of the array towards the audience

@Bruce,
I worked in a shop where all that was played over the radio was Country, so, yeah, I know the song. Don't mind C/W, like classic rock, really like agressive(?) blues ( Bellyup4blues), and appreciate most styles of music including Classic (Mozart, Beethoven,...) pipe organ, EDM....yadayada...

I'm with ya'......except for that EDM stuff....

Been mixing some country bands lately that make me want to break out the Tele and do some chickin' pickin'.

Band I was mixing last night called me up to play guitar on Folsom Prison.....pretty brave on their part, they'd never heard me play. Guess they figured a 100 year old song needed a 100 year old player.

LOL, one of the first songs I ever learned. Memorized the entire album. That was about 88 years ago. :)

Funny, but for years that song was as cliched in the country world as Proud Mary was in the rock world...nobody played it because everybody had played it.....right?

Now, I'm seeing a resurgence of the tune with all the young bands. I guess they don't know they aren't supposed to play it. So, it's coming around for its second ride.
