TLAH, 2/3 height SLA, Curved SLA & THTLP Build

#1 Post by Fushie »

Hey Guys

I'm getting really excited :-) I'm about to finally start my home theater 7.2 build.

I will be building the following cabs

1 pair TLAH's - floor standing version with 9 drivers
1 Curved SLA - 6 drivers
2 pairs of 2/3 height SLA's - 4 drivers
2 THTLP

I plan to build them over the next few weeks during my Christmas leave period, I got some experience with the timber work. My low wood working skills shouldn't be a problem because I got a mate helping me that has the required skills. I plan to finish the units by spraying them with gloss auto paints and this will be new to myself and my mate but hopefully we will be OK. But the thing that is worrying me is the rest of the street not kicking me out once I'm done lol :-)

I'm sitting here working out exactly what drivers and crossover materials I will be needing. I'm planning to use the following drivers and tweeters with the TLAH's and SLA's

Drivers = Goldwood GW-205/4S 5-1/4" Shielded Poly Woofer 4 Ohm
http://www.parts-express.com/goldwood-g ... m--290-374

Tweeters = Goldwood GT-302/S 1/2" Mylar Dome Tweeter Shielded 8 Ohm
http://www.parts-express.com/goldwood-g ... d--270-175

In regards to the crossovers, the plans say you want a 2/3 relationship with the driver/tweeter arrangement before breakup freq impedance.

I have managed to map out the 2/3 height SLA's and gotten the relationship spot on.

But with the TLAH's I can't massage them to get it spot on. I have managed to get 8 Ohm for the drivers and 6 Ohm for the tweeters,

I was hoping if someone could tell me if this is close enough. In a perfect world the tweeters would have an impedance of 5.3

Is less then 10% difference acceptable?

regards

Fushie

Yes. Acceptable. I have it already done on my site for that combination. 8)

I've been keeping a lookout for some close-out mids for my SLA build and I've found some that are as close to the target specs as I can find:
http://www.parts-express.com/celestion- ... m--299-416

Although they are full-range, but I see no problem with that
BFM builds:
XF212
T24 BP102 24"
2x SLA's 6-5" mids, 9- gt-302's
2x AT 14" MCM 55-2421
TrT 5" MCM 55-2421
AT 18" JBL GTO804
2x OT12 flat array
2x SLA Pro 2-Alpha 6's 2-Goldwoods
2x T39 24" 3012lf
Simplex 10 BP102

Those look like a killer deal for the SLA/TLAH. You will have one amazing system once you are done.

I currently it touch with LelandCrooks, and I'm almost certain to be getting him to supply me with all the required goodies. I have to say I'm very happy with his service and prices so far. Leland and Speakerhardware.com get the thumbs up from me. I just wish I got organised earlier so that I could everything in my hot little hands now lol.

Hey Guys
I haven't posted lately but thought I would give you an update. My plans to get busy building over the Christmas period didn't work out, I whole bunch of things came up, Holidays, work commitments, punishingly hi costs of freight to Australia etc. I won't bore you with those details.

But LelandCrooks was a dream to work with and he was gotten some goodies to me so I can at least get started on my 2 THTLP's. I got my table saw delivered and other tools waiting for me in the garage and my timber is getting delivered tomorrow. I also got myself a Minidsp PWR-ICE125 plate amp to drive the THTLP's
https://www.minidsp.com/products/plate- ... pwr-ice125
I'm hoping that the one amp will be enough to drive both THTLP's to my satisfaction, if not I guess I'll grab another lol.

So I'm excited about making my first cuts this weekend :-)

I'll keep you all posted with updates and pics

Hey Guys
I've had an awesome weekend :-) Started of with building a jig for my table saw to allow me to easily deal with the large sheets of ply. It works a treat, I can have a guide rail for pieces up to 60 inches wide. Nice and easy just measure of a datum that I have place and then screw in the rail. Oh and this was my first ever jig that I've made since this real project involving timber. I decided to make this one up because the table saw I have wasn't really suitable for the BFM supplied table saw jib.

Then I finally got started on construction, Things went well. The plans from Bill are amazing. I spent a good while studying them to get everything clear in my head. Then things flowed nicely. It's also my first time using the PL adhesive. That stuff is freakin awesome. I just wish it was easier to get here in Australia. I got some pics attached of my 2 days work.

I also had to add a pic of my foreman/ support team. When I say support they spent most of their time interrupting me and laughing at me since this was their first time seeing me on the tools lol.

I'm off for a few days for work so unfortunately I won't be able to do any more till I get back, I won't even have access to the web lol, so I won't be able to read the forums.

I'll keep everyone updated with my progress when I get back
