Re: Any love for Celestion in the BFM camp?

About ten years ago, I knew a guy who built himself a giant horn rig for use in a now defunct club. The 18" horns he built were apparently designed around an Eminence Sigma but he smashed them up on an almost weekly basis. He later installed Kilomax drivers and destroyed those at an alarming rate, even shorter life than the Sigmas.

The sad bit is, I'm not sure how the story ended as the club closed not long after the rig had been built. I don't even know what happened to the system either.

I don't think he'd have ever resolved the situation as many a time I visited, there were red lights on everywhere from the mixer to the amps..

I find the LAB a curious thing with it's big excursion and low sensitivity..

Emmi 18" have to weak cones and motors for hornloading. There are some that do ok for scoops. But they are not even close to the PD's, Fanes and Celestions for big bass horns.

I bet the TC Sounds Pro 5100 18" Neo would be the ultimate 18" horn driver...you'd have to make a huge horn to maximize its potential though.

cone looks a bit flimsy for hornloading. Looks more like a sealed / ported driver.

18Sound makes the driver in the Danley TH-118 (which is a tapped horn). It's almost $700. 14mm of xmax too... beefy!

A friend sent me a cab design that models within 2-3db of the TH-118 when loaded with this driver... and it's made from one sheet of plywood.

Regarding the TC sounds pro 5100, Its a fiberglass cone...I'm sure its plenty strong. It also has 19mm xmax.
