Much needed review (t60)

#1 Post by DJ Higgumz »

Ok so I've had my t60s since June, and I wanted to wait to review until I had an indoor gig, well that was tonight. I've had numerous outdoor gigs and they do hold their own, wall loaded you get about a 10x10 area of chest thump, but isn't nearly as impressive as indoors.

So my school had an art gallery showing tonight from 5-10, and I played swing and background music while the parade and football game (homecoming game) were going on. And they did great, I was running them at probably less than 10v, only the signal led flickered on my 1400 watt amp. I noticed how well the bass traveled, my tops droped off quicker than the subs. After the close time I had free reign to play what I wanted, so you know, volume goes with that...

Here's where I'm baffled (hehe pun) this was in a hallway, where it is about 50 ft wide in the gallery, 30 where I was. I set up by the school entrance doors (they were all 4 open!), where the sub was in the corner facing a wall with the doors 18" from the corner, almost facing outside. I'd say the hall/room was about 300ft long. The ceiling was about 12ft high, and brick walls and tile flooring. So I've got alot going for high spl and alot of reverb, but surprisingly it didn't echo too bad! And for spl, holy sh**! the ceiling tiles were rattling as were the doors, gaffer tape comes in
handy . I cannot express how much bass there was. And the extension! I could feel the floor shake! Now my respect level with my friends is OVER 9000! and you get the people that say- how many 18s are in there? Haha. At the end of the night I ran a 25hz sine and it was nauseating! Unreal.

Application- to some people they are scared of the t60, but honestly I don't really notice a disservice to the size. I went from a single t39 to these, and though there is more labor I don't have an issue. I could have went with one and still get plenty loud, but it is easy enough to bring 2. It is big but it certainly isn't heavy.
Before Fitzmaurice, big bass could only be had with just a hook and a nightcrawler.

Wait until you do BFD tops too. The tops just keep going and going.

I actually know what scale of reference that means, sort of. Just bought my son a shirt from Hot Topic with Vegeta screaming the quote. Of course now I can't get that damn Baby Finn song out of my buns (I mean my head) when my other son got a shirt with puncha yo buns on it.

Did you do a 1 to 1 compare with the T39 vs 1 T60? How is the overall sound above the "earthquake" range for music playback?

No I didn't because I used one of the labs out of it. I also sold the empty cab to fund the build

I have done AB tests and although the T39 didnt miss a lot of notes but even the same ones the T60 hits them with a lot more authority not to mention anything with sub 40hz content. Overall I just liked the sound better in the T60....see my review in the review thread....title has wbin and yorkville in it. Second page top atm....no link since I am on my phone.

I haven't yet ran a single, i've always used both. I have them eqed to be flat from 30hz. I imagine it would be a db or 2 stronger. for djing they work great as a stage too, you just need to put them on their sides and you have a 5x5 platform. so theres a couple points there for multi-use :P

this weekend I did a gig at a small new hall, I'd say about 40 feet by 90 feet in size. I had a ton of time to set up, bc I got there the day before because I got 30 more feet of truss to test. so I went and eqed the setup to the room. I tried a bunch of configurations with the t60s to see which I liked best, and it seemed that side by side facing the office wall sounded best. that wall isn't a true wall, it doesn't go through the drop ceiling. it is basically an 8 foot drywall cubicle. it was about 9 feet or less to the actual building wall, so I can see where I didn't get much output below 30hz with my test tones. next time I will try a different position. (the pictures are a bit hazy, well.. because of the haze!!)

during the night a lady from a house 500ft away came over and said we were shaking her china. the cool thing was I was running at maybe 35ish volts, so close to my limit which is 45. we went outside the building and we couldn't hear much but maybe 50db or so. but as we walked on it was steady levels all the way to the road. i don't understand this stuff haha.

inside it was crazy. by the subs it was snowing ceiling tile flakes! (pictured below) at the end of the night i did a sine sweep drop from 20k to 20 and the owner thought it was so cool and thought I should make an entrance track out of it.

I like your review, and particularly the '20-20 intro track' concept. Non-muso's would wonder what the hell was going on. Bravo!

Ditto DJ Higgumz. The throw of the BFM boxes I've got is always very impressive...it's really amazing and so opposite of what I'd used for years before I built these.

It takes lot to stop the infrasound frequencies. You won't hear 30hz down the street from a radiator because it was never there. Tops "throw", sub bass "is" or "is not".
