Primer

#1 Post by el_ingeniero »

It's about time to think about painting the 4 T39s. I'm eventually putting on grills with 3mm acusitic foam backing, which is why I didn't chisel out any squeezeout, but I want to Duratex the mouth area anyway. The Duratex should be on it's way form Leland soon.

I know that Suratex won't stick to PL, so I thought to hit the squeezeout with something that it will stick to.

My 2 candidates are:

1) decent flat black latex house paint from the Borg
2) rattlecan of flat black Krylon

Option one is nice b/c I can hit the whole box with it before Duratexing.

Option 1

Paint the whole thing in flat black. You'll use less duratex to cover that way. Let the wood soak up the cheap paint and save the expensive stuff for the top coat.

6 - T39 3012LF
4 - OT12 2512
1 - T24
1 - SLA Pro
2 - XF210

I order my duratex from Leland on Monday. All my cabs except the newest have a couple coats of flat back on them.

I sometimes use 2x coverage spray paint or roll on some interior/exterior paint. Than do a nice sprayed Duratex to finish.
But the Duratex bond is only as good as the primer coat you put on first. Just some side notes.

I went to the Home Depot and looked at primer. They didn't have any in flat black, and they claimed that they couldn't tint primer to black. So I guess I am looking for paint not primer. So the next question is:

Oil or Latex?

From what I've read on here before that would be latex. I've had flat black latex on mine for over one year...just now getting to duratex

So I went back to the Borg today, and found a gallon of Behr Premium Plus Flat in the "Oops" shelf, that was so close to black you might as well call it black. $7.

It's not the best, but it will do for the mouth.

Get a good latex primer, then ask the guy/gal at the paint counter to pour some off until there is 1" of headroom and do a custom color with enough black to fill it back up to the top. That will be a dark charcoal color that is close enough to black for this purpose. Paint the entire cab with primer, paying special attention to the nooks and crannies. Those are very hard to cover evenly with sprayed Duratex.
