New home for my new mixer....

#1 Post by Bruce Weldy »

I bought Frankie G.'s Presonus 16.4.2 a couple of weeks ago. It need a place to reside other than the cardboard box it came in......

Sorry I didn't take photos along the way, I was in a hurry to get it finished - Using it for the first time this Saturday for an outdoor benefit.

Here it is.....

Hinged with come-apart hinges so the top can come off...
Mixer Case 004 small.JPG
Handle on on the front end for one-man carry, and handles on both side for two...
Mixer Case 003 small.JPG
Added side supports and rack rails to hold it in the position that I wanted....
Mixer Case 001 small.JPG
And, because I'm so tired to chasing stuff in the dark, I painted the interior white so it's easier to see things at night....
Mixer Case 002 small.JPG
Got a chance to finally play with the board some today. Easy to use and I think I'm really going to like it. Also, fired up the DriveRack PA+ that I got from Frankie and RTA'd the mains. Moved my old DriveRack to monitors and RTA'd the WH10s to see if I can get 'em sounding the way I want.

All in all, a good day - headed out back for celebratory Dos Equis, Cigar, and headphones.......

Good stuff Bruce!
Nice build.
I like the idea of the white paint inside the case too...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

That's a killer road case Bruce.

I have a SL24.4.2 and I love it. But I didn't even take it out to a show until I bought a custom road case. It is built with 3/8" Baltic birch and even has a doghouse. It's big box though and quite heavy. I have to use a dolly to move it because it doesn't have wheels. Oh, and the price tag was $500. I think I could've built a case for less though.

How much do you have in yours?

Sides are 1/2" baltic birch that I had left over from other builds. The top and bottom are 1/4" ply from home depot. Wanted to keep it as light as possible. Weighed in at 22 pounds. Already had duratex and corners left over from other builds also.

With the plywood and hardware.....about $40-50.....and a bunch of labor. As I was carefully routing out for the handles and latches, my wife walks by and says, "It's just a box...".

Out of rubber feet though.....need to get some.

Starting to get a little obsessed with building it all myself.

Guess I should have added it to this....

Took all the BFM out today along with the new board and case for a Cancer benefit from 10-2.....sounded great and the board is wonderful. Good comments on the clarity of the vocals.....Those OT12s beat the crap out of 15 boxes all day.

Thanks to Frankie G. for selling it to me!

Great job Bruce. Did you have to 'push it' or could you coast for the benefit? Too bad you didn't shoot a quick video of the set up and sound.

Did you create a scene on your SL16.4.2 to recall for another show? The board is quite intuitive and runs a lot like an analog board. But the digital features are nice to have available.

I only took a few seconds of video of two 14 yr old girls playing and singing. The guitar player was in the band that was performing (she's been gigging since she was 12), and the singer was her friend - she had some pipes! In fact, I asked 'em to play our break at an outdoor concert we do every year.

The subs were coasting. I didn't get to put a voltmeter on 'em while the band was playing, but when I had some music going, I was topping out around 3 volts. I'm sure it was much higher with the band. I'm running 4 OT12s with the two T39s. It all sounded good, but honestly a couple of times I felt like a got a little distortion from the tops - I couldn't tell if it was a kick drum hit or bass guitar......but it might have just been something else. I was a bit of a pop, but it never did it when I went up close. I might not have been the speaker at all but rather some sound that was sounding like a pop from one of the players.

Since it was my first time out with the board, I did a little prep work in the garage. I knew the band setup, so I laid out the channels and used the presets that come with the board for each instrument - choosing the first preset of each instrument since there are several. Then I saved that scene. The whole process didn't take 30 minutes and that included trying out several different reverbs and delays.

So, I showed up, set up, and fired it up. Ran a little Steely Dan to set the onboard GEQ, very little adjustment as I had RTA'd with the driverack for outside a couple of days ago. Then brought up the faders......WOW! Actually, it was a little embarrassing.....I'm used to screwing around with EQ on every instrument trying to get it right. I made one adjustment to the kick, a little tweak on the snare and that was pretty much it. The bass sounded amazing....and I've run sound for that player for years and years - it's never sounded better. The vocals were really nice too.

Ran up a little 'verb and delay and the mix was done. Had to scowl, frown, and look busy so they thought they were getting their money's worth...(it was a free gig).

That board, with it's presets - could be make a new engineer pretty good right out of the box once they learn it. I was really impressed. Looking forward to using it again.

Yes, that was a plug. Unabashed man-love for a piece of sound equipment (and quite a looker too!)

Nope. Since the board is secured to the rack rails, there's no need. I had considered some foam to lay on top, but figured the only thing that could hit the board was air.......
