Piezos
I finally got in a batch of piezos. Sorted last night to start building some very overdue arrays. I usually pull the driver heads before I start cutting, it's just easier. Well, they've started gluing the cone in place. I randomly selected a half dozen or so and they're all glued.
No more rotating the driver heads, at least on this batch. I destroyed 4 of them to see if it could be pried loose. I have another 1k coming in next month. I'll check them when they get here. It will also make repair of a bad one difficult, but not impossible.

That's not a bad thing per se, if it makes sealing them unnecessary.LelandCrooks wrote:I finally got in a batch of piezos. Sorted last night to start building some very overdue arrays. Re: Piezos
Hadn't thought about that. Good point.
For repair I think you'd just have to pull the element off, then hot glue it onto the cone of the repaired driver.

Re: Piezos
Does this mean that if there is some debris from the horn material that we won't be able to take it out? I don't have any extra piezos at the moment and it's been so long since i've built my arrays that i have no idea how they're put together.
But since I don't rotate the covers, I think i'll prefer it if I ever get my dr's build started since all that sealing is really something that I would rather not do.
Mhh, I wonder if the ones PE will be getting will also be like this? I got a batch of them for future builds (Of course, SLA pros to go with the four t18's
($4 per driver? why yes, thank you, I'll take 8
(jeez I need to stop with the thought-interrupting-parenthesis)))and if a piece of plastic is rattling around the whole time this will seriously be a game killer.

Re: Piezos
PE's will be identical, we both buy direct from Goldwood.
No you won't be able to get debris out except for from the front.
Buy extras.
I think you could pull one apart by opening it far enough to get an xacto knife in to cut the ceramic away from the cone. Then hot glue it back in place.

Re: Piezos
How about just putting some masking tape over them while working with 'em?

Re: Piezos
Non-removable elements will make it very hard to spray paint them without getting paint on the cone. No more cool colored arrays

Re: Piezos
Buy one on those circular punches they use for cutting holes in gaskets, slightly bigger than the size of the piezo hole.DaveK wrote:Non-removable elements will make it very hard to spray paint them without getting paint on the cone. No more cool colored arrays
Then get some 1/2" - 1" thick foam and punch out some plugs and just pop these into the hole before spray-painting.

Re: Piezos
Or you could use masking tape balls to block the paint from the getting into the tweeter as Bill suggested,or you could do like i did and trace around a penny, cut out the circles and lodge them down into the tweeter to keep the paint out.

did you try melting the glue with a heat gun ?LelandCrooks wrote: Well, they've started gluing the cone in place. I randomly selected a half dozen or so and they're all glued.

No, but that's a pretty good idea.

Re: Piezos
Are the cones still prone to detaching from the piezo driver? That was a problem with the old ones, but they could be fixed with a drop of glue. If the backs are now sealed, loose cones are a lot harder to fix.

Re: Piezos
The cones themselves are glued at the edges. You can only pull the assembly out the length of the leads to the ceramic disc
