Acoust-X - Anyone use?

#1 Post by Kirk Baptista »

Hello, all!

I was looking into using spray foam or something like it for damping the inside of my Jacks, when I saw Acoust-X on the Duratex site.

http://www.acrytech.com/catalog.asp?pro ... prevnext=1

Anyone use it, or have any experience with any other spray on foams?

Thanks!

Usable, but very expensive. Cheap mattress toppers are the norm.

Yeah, I expect I'll end up with a topper, but I can't seem to find a black one... I know, I'm picky.

The Acoust-X seems like a better way, just brush on, etc. and for $25 a gallon, it seems as cheap as foam. I expect a gallon would go pretty far just doing insides. But then, it's not better if it doesn't work as well. I thought someone here must have tried it. The data sheet states a 30% reduction in reflections, and I didn't know if that was sufficient. It seems like you would get more than that with foam. I figured someone on here must have tried it and could shed some light...

It isn't. In the upper midrange where damping is most critical the recommended materials are over 70% effective.

I have it, I've used it. I keep intending to do some testing with it. That whole roundtuit thing. I use it for dampening in DR's, because I primarily build with the butt cheeks from aluminum. I coat them about 1/4" thick. It weighs virtually nothing. Crazy stuff.

I use fabric dye on my toppers.

Ah excellent. Toppers with fabric dye. Perfect. I didn't want to paint and make them all crusty. I know, doesn't matter, except to me.

Thanks for all the info.

Gray foam toppers are here and there, and the shadows inside the box do the rest.
