David - Just For Fun
I started builing cabs as a young teen. Copying EV and Sure stuff mostly. A friend of mine called and told me I had to come over and hear his brothers new speakers. I rode my 10-speed over to his house, parked it in the driveway next to the Gran Torino and was ushered into to inner sanctum. What I saw blew me away. At the time I had no idea what a Klipschorn was but I found out in a hurry. From that day to this that sound has been my quest. Ewetho and I have been building cabs for my PA and SLAs for home theatre and they have been great. I still want a set of Klipschorns...or so I thought. I started looking at the David and decided to go for it. The numbers look great. Maybe I can have that Klipschorn sound after all.
I have been looking forward to starting the build all week. Ordered the plans, got my BB, my order from GR Research came in ... just need my PE order ... D@#MN IT! I never placed it...better get that done. 'Gonna build all day Saturday .... nope! it looks like I'm working all day Saturday... well there's always the evening. Get home with the BB and expectantly set up the shop. Say "Hi" to the wife and off we go.....not so fast. She is lonely and needs some attention. What to choose, both are vital components of my home entertainment system. I choose both. "How about we talk while I lay out the cut and assembly lines?" "OK" she says. I love this woman. (Those of you who came to the listening party met her. A guy like me couldn't ask for a more supportive spouse...and no she's not looking over my shoulder right now either.) I am laying out the side after trimming the panel square. We're (I mean she's) talking. I look at page 3 . What is the dimension for the cut out for the mid tweet section? What am I missing ....it's not in the plans...check page 4...not there either...she's still talking... check page 3 AGAIN ... what am I missing? How do I locate the cutout for the driver and the cutout for the mid section wings...she's still talking ... wait what did she say? ARGH What am I missing? What did she say? "Look further in the plans and use the length of panel 5 won't that tell you how to mark the cut length for the owings on the side panel?", she suggests. Genius! That will fix my location issue on panel 3 as well. I love this woman. (I better check on the forum just in case before I make with the saw dust. So... is this correct? I don't see any was to properly locate panel 3 and the cut length on the side panel for panel 5 in the plans.. am I missing something?) Well we got a side panel marked. Let's go inside and watch a movie before bed.
I would like to be sure my marks are correct before I start cutting tomorrow.

The length for panel #5 is on page 8, so yes, she's right. As for panel #3, the diagram in the middle of page 3 shows the basic dimensions for the side panel cut-out. That gives you the placement line for panel#5. With panel #3 cut to length, place it's "top" end on location, and then put the "bottom" end on location measured from panel #5 location.

Thanks, Tom. Yes she is.
I also noticed I started this in the wrong section. I meant to start the thread in The Home Theatre section. So...Mr. Moderator if you could move us. Thanks, sorry for the hassle.

You'd have avoided most of your confusion had you followed this admonition near the top of page 1:
please read these instructions completely through at least twice before you make with the sawdust

Re: David - Just For Fun
Quite so, Bill. I had read the directions many times before but it doesn't all sink in untill I start marking things out. At least this time I double checked before cutting. BTW I am in no way unhappy with the plans. They are fine. The added diagrams are great. It's just me. I get all excited. Building these cabs is like crack. I have never before been able to build cabs of such quality and performance. I have you and my forum friends to thank for that.Bill Fitzmaurice wrote:You'd have avoided most of your confusion had you followed this admonition near the top of page 1:

Which mids and tweets are you using?

He got matched set of GR-T6 Tweets and the M130 Woofers per the plans and the optional Tang Bands for the Subs per plans.
We had decided first build exactly to plans. Were actually considering an SLA for a while but decided per the plans first.

Re: David - Just For Fun
I almost think that reading the plans all the way through is a bad idea. At least for me anyway.
Too easy to get all excited and think too far ahead.
Just as Bill suggests to to one panel at a time I may read step one, cut panel and glue, then walk away. Next day same thing.
The David is my next projectso baron, I was wondering if you ordered your crossover components from PE and if so which parts did you order?
PE has so many different components that seem to be the same but are priced differently.
I had leland build my tlah/sla crossovers but I don't see the david crossover on his web site.
I can solder but I absolutely hate doing it, so the less I have to do the better.

Re: David - Just For Fun
He ordered the crossover components from PE and chose the liquid ferrite cored inductor for the big ones. He did use just the iron core for the big 150.
Couple minor suggestions for the plans per the Baron.......
Page 3 --
Side panel would be nice to know where to make the notch in to measure for the access panel. Info not available till page 16 and still had to be calculated. 22".
Page 9 --
Panel 5 would be nice if marked as a parallelogram not a trapezoid (not clear even now knowing.)
So far though VERY COOL BUILD!!! Lots of FUN!!! Getting Excited!!!
Got other saying but may be TMI!!!

Wow, that is one skinny section at the access cover! Even when I looked at the plans, I didn't realize the size.
Good lookin' build so far.

Re: David - Just For Fun
Are you using the recently updated David plans or going off the old ones?
Ya the access cover looks to have a skinny section but I recall my tht also was skinny or so it seemed until the panel went uP.
Strange though that the cut out demendions are not given when the side is cut.
Further to crossovers, PE lists many brands and also many choices within brand. Does it matter, just pick whatever is to spec? I don't have my cataloge handy but I recall a wide array of choice that leads to confusion.
