2 24" T48 build (my first build)

#1 Post by djeccentric »

so today i finally made some sawdust on my titan 48s i got the sides ruffed out and all the 23" stuff ruffed out and one side trimmed. my dad came down today and hooked me up with the table saw and work bench. he also helped me ruff the stuff out of the 4x8 sheets. so i am on my way nothing that looks like a speaker yet but it is a good start.

i have my first build question. in the plans i don't see exact measurements for laying out the holes for the handles. how are you guys laying them out? sometimes it is just best to ask. i plan to use a hole saw at each end and a jig saw to go between.

today i went through and sized all the 23" +- pannels. when i was getting started today (after cutting on side yesterday) that i had not measured my plywood thickness which turns out to be 15/32 which i knew when i bought it but sort of forgot. anyway i couldn't take much of a cut off the other side and them still be 23 1/16 so i made them 23 1/32. no big deal just my box wont be 24" like i planed it will be 23 31/32"

uh oh, looks like someone forgot about the added width for corner hardware. I suspect your box will be somewhere around 24 13/32 when you finish and put the corners on.

what I'm trying to say is: as long as it fits, who cares how many 32nds you are off hahaha.

i just came in for a break from working on my subs. i decided to do them one at a time. i made a few guide strips. one 1/2 inch thick one for a saw guide and one that i layered 3 pieces of ply. they came out close to cubed. i also got panel 1 finished. i screwed up my first plunge cut for the driver opening. not a big deal i just had to cut it an 1/8th larger. i will do the other the same so no one will ever know. i used a 1/4 radius round over for the handle holes. and it made a little sharp edge in the middle when i did the 2nd side. no big deal i just used a file and some sand paper to clean it up. overall i am happy with the way this thing is shaping up. though i am seeing that i got myself into more than i thought going in. i will post some pictures when i am done for the day.

on i side note about being off a 32nd of an inch. i used to be a machinist before i hurt my back. a lot of times things would be +-2 or 3 thousandths of and inch, sloppy work would be +- 10. a 32nd is 31 thousandths.

well i just got panel 1 glued and nailed to the side. i then proceeded to cut the bevel on the upper edge of panel 2 and cut the baffle opening in panel 1 i decided to stop there because my back was starting to hurt and i realized i did not have a compass. so i will continue my adventure tomorrow most likely after going and purchasing a compass. none of the ones i have ever seen around the house would be big enough anyway.

i got this far yesterday

here are some pictures of today's work.

and i had my first and hopefully only blow out today

i came up with a solution to my compass problem and got panel 2 almost done. tomorrow when the glue is dried on panel 1 i will fit two and glue it in place. maybe even get 3 and 4 glued in. it is down hill from here until it comes time for bracing.

well i did some more work today. made one major mistake. i cut panel 3 an 1/8th too short. (cutting angles are tricky. anyway i decided to install it anyway. it caused a slight overhang of panel 4. nothing a file wont fix when the glue dries. hopefully it wont hurt performance. anyway i am going to wait a lil while for the glue to set some and go back to it.

i worked some tonight and last night. boy i am getting frustrated. i feel like it is not coming out well. things are pretty much all withing an 1/8th at the most/ most thing a 1/16 or better. like i said i am a machinist so i am used to super tight tolerances. i guess we will see when i get it done and weather or not it works well.

All that matters is that it is sealed tight. Whenever I've got a loose joint I just put an extra bead of PL on and smear it up and down the line with my finger or a paper towel to make sure it is sealed. Even if you're off with the panel width as long as there is glue preventing the air from escaping there won't be any real performance problems since PL can fill 1/8 gaps easily.

Accept the fact that well braced and airtight is more important than looking good.

Isn't that someone's quote?

Just take it slowly, follow the plans carefully, and you'll get there eventually. My first build was a pair of Otops, and I really wish I would have taken them slower since I built both of them at the same time in a series of days. I failed to notice my mistakes gluing the first set of panels and ended up with most the panels slightly off, so my Otops are not square... :wall: But you can only tell if you put a square against it since I sanded them down to make it look square :fruit:

Keep going!

Looking very nice. Don't worry too much about the insides. If the cab is airtight and square, who's gonna know?

If the crack is really big, stuff extra wood into the crack, and glue liberally.
