Speaker Carpet Glue

#1 Post by DaveK »

I need some recommendations for a non-spray glue for attaching carpet. I'm building some road cases and want to line the inside with speaker carpet (a.k.a. "rat fur"). When I used to cover speakers with carpet I used 3M spray glue. However, working inside a box I'm worried about controlling overspray onto the carpet that is already attached. Are there any roll-on or brush-on products that work as well as 3M spray glue for carpet?

yes it is!!

you can use contact cement, you can find it in any harware store and in hardware depts at any dept store nearby.

just apply one coat to the wood and one to the ratfur wait about 5 minutes and ready you may need a rubber mallet (or take a piece of wood to hit or comb the fur to take out air after placing it . take special care on corners

you also may need some mineral spirits to clean spills. it can be brushed or roled on (better brushed)
There is a very thin line between fail and success. It is very thin so, why are you scared???

IMO I would use spray like mentioned but I think you could use some kind of contact cement, maybe the stuff for laminate countertops.
For over spray just hold a piece of cardboard over the place you don't want spray preferable over in the direction of sprayed area.

I have fabulous good luck with 3M #77 contact adhesive spray.
The trick is waiting long than you think you should, so the tack fully develops.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.

x2 on 3m Super 77.

As Bgavin mentioned, Spray on both surfaces (Carpet and Enclosure) and wait 30 or so seconds.

Never had speaker carpet peal using this stuff.

I use this on all my cabs http://hbfuller.com.au/catalog/diy/adhe ... ?Itemid=26

I can get that spray on 3M stuff here but it's so damned expensive and it does not go very far at all. I hate the smell as well.

The carpet glue is laid on with a fine V notch trowel that carpet layers use. Leave for 15 mins until tacky, the apply the carpet. It's very forgiving if you get the carpet slightly out of line. It wipes off with turps if you have a stuff-up. Take care that you don't too much on ( hence the V notch trowel ) otherwise it will seep through the carpet when you press it down.

Thanks, Harley. I found something similar for indoor/outdoor carpet in the flooring section of the store. It works, but does the smell ever go away? After two weeks it's still outgassing.

FWIW:
I used to use the 3M 77 but it's too "foggy" when it sprays and it's hard to tell where you've sprayed. I've since switched to the 3M "high strength" 90 (green can) and although it's more expensive the bond is stronger and it's far easier to control the spray pattern than the 77. It's also much easier to see where the spray is going than the 77. It sprays and works very similar to the landau top glue I used to use when I was installing car audio. (before CA. outlawed it's use...)

I'll never go back to the 77...

Yes the 3M spray glue is quite good for sticking carpets. It is very sticky and dries fast. So you’ve got a great choice to glue your carpet.

Use a cardboard shield to keep over-spray off already installed carpet.
