Otop 12 review

#1 Post by mike james »

Last night we did a gig at a local bar. This was our first chance to try out the Otop 12's one per side. The room size was 24' wide by 70' long. This also had 2 large doors open and a large outside deck for the smokers. The place was jam packed all night long, I would guess 300 people.

We set up one Otop each side on a stick and two subs center clustered. I did a reveiw on the subs awhile back so this one will be for the tops only. I used the 2 Otops beta loaded with meld array, leaving the two straight array Otops at home.

After a little EQ I was so pleased with the results! They sounded great and filled the room with sound. We play 80's - new metal rock(Ozzy,Metallica, ect) and play with volume. They were clean, clear, and loud all night, with no clip light blinking. The beta is not the recommended driver. I have never heard a Otop with the 2512 so I can't tell how much better they are. YMMV but I am very very happy with the Otop 12's with the beta. Way more clean, clear volume then what we used to get out of our 2 15's w/ horn.

Thank you Bill for a great design and reasonable price on your plans.

The Beta 12 works very well as a bang for the buck driver, in both tops and subs. It's not going to give the 3012 series any competition, but it's inexpensive and available just about anywhere.

Sorry I didn't see your question sooner, Hallwalk3r. I am very happy with the Otops! If I had to do it all over again I would do it the same as I did. With 2 -T48's and 4 -Otops I cross them around 100 to 110. If you have the Beta's I say what are you waiting for . Build, build, build....

I am about to start a herd of narrow T39's soon. My bad back just can't handle moving the T48 's up and down our stairs anymore.

Are you guys talking about the Beta 12a II? (http://www.speakerhardware.com/beta_12a ... a12a-2.php)

Is it really acceptable in the OT12 or say.. T39?

yes, I used the Beta 12A II in the Otops and with some EQ they go very loud and sound great. I am very happy with the sound, much better then my 2-15's and horn. Djwoo used them in both Otops and T 39's , but I will let him chime in and tell you about his findings.

Interesting, opens up options for budget building as our choices are somewhat limited down here.

Actually the Titans runs on passive crossover's, last November the most of my equipment must go due to financial problems. No active x-over, no Eq. But still sound great.
