Omni 15 wide for 5 string electric bass. Fixing for a build.
Hi to all,
I'm Glyn from Lincoln, England and been on this forum as a lurking guest for a while. I play bass and made the change from 4 to 5 string (Warwick FNA Jazzman 5) a year ago. I've been threatening a cab build for a couple of years now and have just bought Omni 15 plans which I intend to make as the wide version. Did I choose right? - i must have read all the reviews on here. Slow and steady will be the way it works for me and the Aguilar 2X12 will do fine till then. I'll probably spend a month reading the plans and tool gathering.
I came across this while surfing a few weeks back and wondered what you guys think. It doesn't faze me a bit as I've read the reviews on here, partricularly the bass playing guys.

if it doesn't become a live link you'll have to copy and paste it.
So, that's it. Got the first post done. All the best and back soon.

I'm guessing the author (scientist):
Never heard a Klipschorn, Was not at Cleveland Municipal Stadium on August 31, 1974 ( to hear perhaps the largest horn system ever assembled ), or run simulations with Hornresp.
( In general an assessment from someone personally unfamiliar with horns. )

Yes, good choice. You will be impressed and happy. Make sure to break in your drivers as it makes a huge difference. I built an Omni 12 and didn't break in the driver and was underwhelmed until the driver broke in(Delta 12lf). I'm now quite happy with it. It handles 5 string very well. I originally wanted to build the O15 but it is too large to fit in my car.wounded horse wrote: Did I choose right?

The tall version is surely a much easier load in/out. My Trace 15" bin is lighter but similar proportions to the wide one and it's a proper prick to shift. Far harder to move than my old ginormous, heavy (but tall) 3-way 15" PA speakers.

Shape is probably entirely dependent on your car, but I also prefer the tallboy due to the higher placement of the HF element.

Guys, thanks for the replies. My choice of can config is due entirely to the fact that as a wide cab I can get it in the volvo estate without lowering the rear seats. Then it goes in on the left lengthways and my friends fender valve combo goes in next to it and then the bass and strat go on the rear seat. This is a breeze as size/weight goes. I hauled a 2X15 for a long time.
Can anyone post a schematic for wiring as a bass driver/mid horn only. I won't be needing the tweeter.

:iitp: "An option for bass guitar is to run with no tweeter. In this case the HF roll-off components are omitted from the midrange filter, as shown here:"....then there's a diagram about page 24wounded horse wrote:Can anyone post a schematic for wiring as a bass driver/mid horn only. .

I would have said at 39" high, the tallboy would fit width ways in a Volvo.

For starters, the guy is a government worker.
As with all general purposes answers, this one is half-wrong.
Horn folding does indeed attenuate the produced sound... where the radius arc length is short compared to wave length.
This is about 60" in a bass horn.
OP, you have come to the right place to get started with your project.
None of Bill's designs are lo-tech. This translates to "Hi-Fi" for sound quality.
Not everybody likes HiFi sound... Ampegs still sell very well... YMMV.
If you want the Big Bottom, the O15 is the ticket, followed by O12.
Jack, and the Omni10 are much stronger in the midrange.
If you are a bi-amper, then T39 with an OT12 on top works very well.
Jack wins the one-handed carry, every time.
The J110 is a nice, all-purpose cab. The build is straight forward, and it also does well as a stage monitor.
The Omni10 is made obsolete by the Jack, which is an improved design.

My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.
Re: Omni 15 wide for 5 string electric bass. Fixing for a build.
I've built the original (wide) Omni 15 as well, without the HF driver. It came out quite well, despite using some heavy and warped MDF! The MDF was free, so I couldn't refuse
You should be able to find my thread on it in the reviews section, but the cabinet was really powerful, and in most cases too powerful for anything I'd really need! At most, I'd imagine I could happily get away with an Omni 12, but I love its flat response and its reassuring strength!
