TLAHs

#1 Post by PauloDuto »

Hi!
These below linked photos I’ve never published here; but are in the photobucket archives; no problem;

http://s269.photobucket.com/albums/jj51 ... 478gq5.jpg
The First one are from the Davids I made; I used 6”OEM woofers and a Selenium ST-320 slot tweeter(the claimed dispersion is 120º x 40º); A Pioneer 8” is working in the horn; I’m enjoying them for a while as they bring the like live performance to the room…
They are crossed passively and the tweeter receives an elaborated parametric one to work with the woofers;
The second picture is of the TT which I also made; it works good in the corner; my wife put the photo albums on it (it’s WAF negotiation…);
But I’ve six modifyied Showhorns (with 15”) on the other side of the room, with four working…

Firstly I made some Sla’s using four elements (woofers and tweeters per box), which pair I’ve tested in a Church, in order to compare them against the installed four two-way boxes with a 15” and driver; The room has 26x12m;

They outstand the installed sound system ; Olson in Acoustical Engeneering teached us how a LA principle works in the fifties;

Inspired by SchawnB youtube link I decided that was time to made somethink like his TLAH;

Now I'm testing the TLAH which are better; they clearly function like LA; they are in another league:

I made them using 18mm ply and also crossed them passively; the summed vertical elements rise the response; you have to account it to put the drivers in phase;
Made it correctly and your reward will be great.
Vertical dispersion is like a parallel line …Horizontal is wide.

Sorry Davids but...

I prefer the sound of my David to TLAH/TT for music. I'm not aware of any Pioneer woofer that will work as well as the recommended drivers in David, and half of what makes it work as well as it does is the woofer horn.

Hi!

The Davids are very good speakers specially for listen music and beside the four Showhorns make a fine system.

But I have to use the drivers that are available at our market:
The 6” OEM woofers developed by a friend and the Selenium ST320 slot tweeter provide good midbass up response (see bellow chart from one six):

The front arrangement layout a la D’Appolito, and the slanted front, near a truncated pyramid, minimizing diffraction losses really work very well;
The three-way passive crossover give us some effort specially for the Pioneer but when fixed works very good:

So they are playing in the dedicated HT room untill July,2007.

In spite of it we are always looking for something new and hoping to surpass it’s performance and usually compare it to what we have...

So to my taste the TLAH arrangement functioning like a LA and with good woofers and tweeters are in another league.
