Another great weekend for BFD cabinets

#1 Post by mullett »

Hey all out there

Just wanted to take a moment and drop a line for anyone that might still have doubts.
This weekend I had the oppertunity to provide some equipment and run sound for a large outdoor carnival type festival. It was at the local fire station in Zoneton(hillveiw)KY. Its a benafiet that is done every year for the WHAS crusade for children. We were under a very large tent with the main stage and covering about three football fields of carnival with sound. A local store had donated quite a lot of equipment, mostly Yorkville product.
After setting up on Wed night we tried the system with only recorded music. We where using the Yorkville Elite 215(the big one with the 2" compression driver) for the foh mains. 4 of the Elite 118 subs for low frequency. The folks in charge decided that we where not getting enough and ended up aquiring 2 more(total 6) yorkville 118 for the weekend. After playing the system on thursday during the day I received a call for more. There seemed to be a problem with the mains shutting down.......To make a long story short and give praise to Bill and his designs......
The Elite215's where replace with my columns of dr 200, 4 per side. I am running the older version with only the standard 6 element 1016 in the front. A Crest CC400 used to power all 8 of the DR200's
The sound was not only louder, but very clean and distinct. All bands that played on the system commented on the quality of the sound all weeked  . With only the one amp and 8- 8" speakers 48 1016 tweeters, we acheived more and better than with twice as much power and , well, the other speakers where capable of. The others ended up being used as fills on the outside of the ten.

If in doubt try out these designs, You will never be disapointed.
Thanks continued to Bill for sharing all of his knowledge he has been blessed with.

So, you stuck with using the Yorky subs though? or did you bring in your own subs? How did it keep up or compare with?

We stuck with using all six of the yorkville 118's. I should mention that two of them were the powered version, four were passive. A yorkville 4040 amp was used for each pair of passives.

I have 8 of the t39's. I think my t39s vplated and stacked would have kept up with the 4 passive. However adding the other two powered was a big improvment. So I left them and did not go thrugh the work of hauling mine to the site. Although I can, and have ran all 8 of my t-39 on one amp(crest cc4000) so it would have been a much more efficient system and sounded much better. It was only after I made the comment you should have let me bring my Eight tens that the folks running the show decided to go get two more of the 118. They could only get the powered ones. They felt they needed more bass.

The big plus here is that they still did not have enough(with all 6) to keep up with the 4 dr 200's I had stacked on each side. I just cannot say enough about how impressed I am with these designs. I really am looking toward rebuilding a new system with the new design. After working with the piezos, I am really torn about using them or changing to the new wave guide and compression drivers. And then they through the new Jack10 design into the mix. It seems to maybe be a much easier build. I am just going to wait till I see some comparisons between it and the dr200.

Have a great evening to all

And there was no resistance to you replacing the 215's with the much punier looking DR200's?

Having run a stack of 4OT12's which are a touch smaller, a stack of 4 DR200 is not what I'd term "puny". It only is on an individual basis.

Sorry gus for the slow response. I dont get to spend as much time here as I would like.

A stack of 4 dr 200 is actually pretty impresive. i have them all 4 bolted together in a straight array. So the array is about 6 1/2' tall. makes it real easy to hndle on a 2 wheel dolly. And before some of you talk about pack space, I haul them in a 16' trailer layin on their side length wise stacked and works great. I can load and unloadby myself. My entire system can be set up and running in about 1 hour.
No one really questioned the size, it was more like "what size speaker in that cabinet? your kidding right". everyone really suprised that theres only 8-8" and 48 tweeters for that much sound.

the sound from this array is very cool. I run a DBX drive rack. always auto eq then tweek a little for the venue and bands. The have never sounded bad. in this instance they really did have more output then the before mentioned speakers. Even with the drive rac set to limit the power as to not over power the speakers that I am using in the cabinets.

Hats off once again to Bill and His work
Thanks
