Finally 2 T39's Done

#1 Post by Haysus »

O.K. I just couldn't wait as I write this on my phone.I am finally finished with my Titans. Start date was 11/20/08, 2 20" T39 3012LF, finish date 3/31/09.Thanks to all on the forum. The knowledge base here is huge,so read often. Thanks also to Speaker Hardware. First off my carpentry skills are shotty at best, but I have access to proper tools and I am learning how to use them. Duratex finish makes them look very pro and it is very durable. Alright now for the sound. After checking for leaks I couldn't wait to hear'em. I used a cd player,Behringer mixer, Nady xover and EV amp.Recorded music random top 40. No top boxs. You get what you pay for on xovers. Minus some HF bleed thru the bass is LOUD & CLEAR. First 1 at a time then together. Even in my basement it was way obvious the difference of boundry loading, almost night and day. I can't wait to Vplate and test live.I have pics I will post later. They will be paired with JBl dual 15's for tops until I build my DR200's. I have a show next month and I'll cotinue my review.BTW these are replacing 2 18" 750watt direct radiators.

How do you find the sound and output to be compared to the dual 18's ?

So far in my basement the sound is very punchy and clear. It really is deceiving how loud it really is without measurement. From past experience i am used to hearing low end distorsion from the 18's. A big muddy mess of frequencies that overwhelm the body and ears. That is what a some of my audiences ask for  not knowing the difference. The thing I am looking forward to is being able to talk to the person next to me and hear everything on stage loudly.
I have also noticed if your within 4' of the front(not boundry loaded)they move enough air that you can feel it.
I gained some pack space on the footprint, and lost about half the weight. :hyper:
Any takers for slightly used boat anchors?

yeah o.k. I said I'm not the best carpenter or follower of directions. I realized what I did after I sealed them.BFM are very forgiving and if it bites me later it's ok I want to build more and learn from my mistakes.BTW i didn't mention the problems I had along the way. I F**ed up more than I like to admit but they sound better than my18's. I hope my DR200 build is better. Good eye, keep the patrol comin I need all the help I can get. Sorry for any errors I am Posting from my phone cause the desk/lapis not so good right now.

With a little patience and agility this can be rectified if need be.

It is the back panel that is insufficiently unbraced.
If you get a buzz, this is the cause.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.

Depending on how wide it is, it'll also act like a blockage. I'd fix it.
Tomorrow I'm going to stop procrastinating - WB

Yeah wow, luckily it looks to be in a spot close enough to the mouth you can fix it one way or another. Good deal!

Good memories...the first pair of T36 slims that I finished with 4015LF drivers in them, big heavy beasts. I ran a plx-3002 bridged to them stacked and fired up a Korn cd for shits and grins. Almost lost my lunch 4 feet in front of them...vision blurring goodness! :) Breathing? Who needs to do that?

Nice build my friend!

I had a gig this past Saturday with limited success. I bought 2new Crown XTI amps because I did not have any other Xover and I like new toys. 1 hour prior to the show I am still fiddling with the system architect. New band 10'x10' stage that is boxed on 3 & 1/2 sides(you have to see it), bass, guitar, keys, electric drums, 4 vocals. The drummer and the keys both had their own Bose monitor rigs(basic small full P.A.) on stage right next to the vocal mics, major bleed on the (electric)drums.Small club so i only took 1 sub.No low end the entire night. The problem was not testing the amps first  :wall: .n Sunday messed with the amps and holy hold on to your socks, the low end is back with a vengance. I have more shows next month and fixed my operator errors so I will submit my final report later.

O.k. Got the amps sorted out and decided to use a preset xo for jbl tops and subs. My current tops are JBL. 1 pair single 12" and 1pair dual 15".The party was in an Elks lodge with 200 capacity only 80 guest actually showed. The content was top 40 request all night(i am not a dj). I did corner load the 39's which was right behind where I was sitting. Going from moldy oldies to current dance pop songs gave me a big wake up call for needing to set my limiters. I damn near fell out of my chair on the first big hit. I'm not even at WAR volume yet.
I did get a chance to walk around the room and hear every thing and it was stellar. 75 feet away the low end was clear and punchy that seemed to fill the room completely. The tops were the JBL12's with beaming dispersion and mids trailed off at 35-40 feet. It's time I start my DR's.
Next month I go back to live music. May 16th, Church St. Bar and Grill St.Peters,Mo

Update! live band with recorded music during the breaks. I have yet to run the system @ 100% but it's not necessary in most of the clubs I play. WOW my 18's could never hit the sensitivity of these cabs. Comparison only @ 55Hz to 18's everything else is non existent . I loaded the cabs end to end in front of the stage, but I would have prefered wall loading. At this stage of reprogramming I wish I started the DR200s at the same time. The jbl's just don't cut it anymore. On a side note (sorry this post is so long) I have learned more about sound, on this forum, in the past year than I have in the past 12 years in the feild. Big thanks to all contributors and especially BFM!
