Calibrating using a spectrum analyser

EQ guys are using on their cabs/systems. A good starting place if you don't have your own RTA.

Calibrating using a spectrum analyser

#1 Post by Alan Star »

This stems from the topic 'dr300 hf options' but I thought is more relevant here.

Here is a shot of my studio monitor set up using pink noise and a dbx rta mic held just a foot away from one of the monitors.

As you can see, the 'multi~inspector' is flat where as 'live's' spectrum' analyser has a decline. This is because the multi inspector has a default 3db/oct boost for Slope and live's analyser does not.

My question is, when calibrating the eq on a pa system outdoors (or indoors) should you have the 3db/oct boost engaged or not to get a reading ? It seems to make sense to me to use it on when trying to achieve a fairly flat response such as what my monitors show with it on otherwise the sound would be top heavy ?

In case anyone may be interested, I have concluded with the testing i've done so far, on a couple of different set up's, that to achieve a read out of a flat response, using software like this, and pink noise, you need that default + 3db slope 'on'.
