Piezo's....really...??

#1 Post by DAVID_L_PERRY »

I did an all day PA hire this Sunday for a great local charity event.

5 very good bands.

I used my 4DR280 and two titan 48's.
I had help from a couple of other Pa suppliers. On of them I know very well, (I worked in a band with him about 7 years ago)

He works as a PA engineer full time on large events. their main rigs are Nexo & L'Acoustic, but use many other high quality line array systems.

He also sings in a local band on occasional gigs now. I provided PA for them at a venue a couple of months ago and he commented on the good sound from my 'D&B type C4' copies...He pestered before the gig asking what was in them, and I just told him I would tell him after the gig...He ended up having to go straight after the gig for one reason or another . This Sunday when I set up the rig and he was down helping, he asked again....I told him I would tell him after the bands....(I wanted an unbiased opinion)...

After the third band, whilst we were stood at the desk I told him....1 eminence 12" driver and 12 little piezo's..He smiled assuming I was joking...then realised I was deadly serious....Priceless

In his words, it was one of the best and cleanest sounding rigs he has heard in that place, the guy is not one for pulling his punches...

I am pretty confident that it sounds good, but its always nice to be told you are doing a good job....and even nicer when you know its gear you have built with your own hands 8)

The last band was a group called 'Wired Desire' who had traveled down from Glasgow just to play at this gig, good players and great performance.

Just got this emailed over from the event organiser:-
The equipment and the way it was operated was first class and all the bands commented on it.
For anyone to say a sound man is a luxury is talking out of their backside. I've seen most of yesterdays bands play before and there is no doubt yesterdays sound engineering made a difference.
I love my toy run gigs and I get a lot of thanks from folk because of them, but it is people like you that make the toy run what it is.
Your contribution was outstanding, and I don't mean to be patronising!
Thanks ever so much, it was probably the best gig yet!
Cheers
Ali
Knob twiddling plays its part, but gear is a big factor in my opinion.......
Thanks Bill

Dave

Love it...
I could provide a litany...but that quote puts a smile on the faces of those who dwell in the shadows and make the "tech" work.
( All the while fending off the advances of fat chicks, and drunk dudes who want to "operate the board" * Based upon real events )

This is what I printed out and took to a few gigs for while when I was getting bored of answering the same questions:-
Before you interrupt the operator of this console with your technical questions please check out the common answers to the more frequently asked questions ……..

1. I do not take requests or dedications, and no I'm not the DJ.

2. Yes I do know what all these knobs do and no I don't have the time to tell you.

3. That also means you can't touch them….no really…stop it now

4. The sound man is hired to mix the show, please don't tell him how to do his job…yes the guitar/drums/vocals (delete where appropriate) is probably not loud enough I completely agree. Now fuck off.

5. Yes the guitars are out of tune, and no, I cant do anything about it...

6. Yes, the speakers do look loud….yes they are loud…

Have nice day

For the mods to decide, but my vote is Dave's OP be moved or duplicated to the Reviews section. Great stuff 8)

Congrats Dave. Glad you are getting great results and great compliments on your rig.

Dave is a great example of how to take a DIY system and get great results. His workmanship on the cabs, the nice grills and professional look gets his foot in the door. They look the part. That is important.

Next Dave has tweaked his DR rig to the N'th degree, done lots of listening, knows what works, and knows how to properly deploy the rig.

I can't even begin to explain how many times I have seen badly deployed high-end rigs. Companies like L'Acoustics, Nexo, D&B and the other upper-end touring rig companies make some truly excellent (and SUPER expensive) products. But in effect their quality is often limited by the space they are placed in, the tuning of the rig, and most of all the abilities of the guy mixing the show. Done right, they can be GREAT. So can DR's. Both a V-Dosc rig and a DR rig can sound like total crap if they are not properly deployed and tuned. One interesting thing about higher-end rigs is that they can sometimes be less forgiving. The performance potential is great but a skilled operator is required to REALLY get the most out of them.

Not to undermine the DR's but DAVE is just as much a part of the equation as the DR's. The DR's are just a good starting point.

Good feedback Dave I was winding down at a gig last Saturday and with a little Bud Light just walked the room and reflected on my 280, Titan 48 setup. And said to myself damn this rig sounds good and listening with ears instead of checkbooks. And to sum it all up and this is most of what matters is it is making money and it is booked for the next 7 weeks period.

All of this obtained from advice directly from this forum.

Thanks very much for the comments guys.

It has to be said that as long as you are willing to try stuff out and have the strength and conviction to do things the right way and not get concerned about comments from bands who say 'subs should be stacked each side of the stage cos it looks better' you will get results.

Funny thing, when I see every other band with stacked cabs each side of the stage I think it looks odd, but thats because I know its wrong... 8)

Dave

it is quite funny but i now just how much this is true. two weeks ago started stacking subs all on one side and now if it is stacked either side i think it is crazy and wierd

congrats dave on the praise you rig is getting, must feel good to know you made it yourself

cheers dave
