myork's bass cart

#1 Post by David Robinson »

I had the distinct pleasures of meeting Mark York (aka myork) last Friday and playing through the bass rig he constructed for use by a high school marching band. I think y'all have all seen picture:

I was playing my 80's Peavey Foundation (I replaced the neck p/u with a DiMarzio Billy Sheehan sig Model One). Mark will have to give you the exact model numbers of what's in the rack. I know it has a SansAmp pre into a Crown amp. I didn't mess with any of his settings; I just plugged in and played. The cabs are a dual HL10(C?) T48 and a older design DR250. We started out inside Mark's huge workshop/garage/storage shed/ building. This rig is LOUD, powerful and clean.

Mark then suggested we take it outside. About 20' in front of the rig, you could feel it in your chest. I went through my albeit limited bag of tricks. A little funky thumb stuff, some Jaco bridge p/u licks, a little bright Geddy Lee, some deep neck p/u stuff. Keep in mind I never touched the rack's EQ settings just the volume and tone controls on my bass. This rig did everything anyone could ever ask for.

Then Mark tells me he's got another DR250 built with the updated plans. So we swapped the DR's. I'm not exactly sure what the difference between the two is, but the second cab sounded fuller to my ear.

In my 25+ years of playing bass at one level or another, I've played through more bass rigs than I can mention, from the cheap to the boutique. I have never played through a rig as responsive.

Other thoughts...A T48 is huge. DR's not only look cool, they sound great. I asked Mark about the build difficulty of the DR's. His answer was "I'm not a wood-worker and I built them." That gives me hope. Mark also had a Omni10 and a Tuba. Both are bigger in person than I had expected.

Also present at the Wunderkart demo were my Dad (an audiophile of sorts) and my youngest son, Hunter (a guitarist of local reknown amongst those who like lyrics like "Rrrooooaaaarr", bassist in his high school jazz band and trumpet player in the symphonic and marching bands). Both were very impressed.

Bottom line: If you want a bass rig that will blow the doors off a couple of 8x10's, a Titan and a DR is what you want. Stop sitting on the fence and build!
I'm not a musician, but I play one in a band.

Thanks, Dave, for your visit and kind words. It's true, I'm no woodworker by any means, but I managed to build a DR250. If I can build one, with patience, and the plentiful help available on this forum, anyone can build one. It's nice to hear what a "real bass player" thinks of the bass cart. MY
