Janel Joining (different than in plans)

#1 Post by Wes Whitmore »

So let's say that I need a panel that is longer than the a can cut out of my available wood supply. Lets say that I need a 24x48 rear panel. I am wondering if I used 2 24x24 panels with the seam going horizontally, with the seam also being supported by a 4"x.5" brace on the inside of the box would be a solution? I could even miter the two "seam" edges of the boards if that would help. I would also be bracing the back at the recommended locations in the plans (O15). I would fill the crack and sand it down before finishing as well.
Is this OK?

Most of the plans show how to join two panels together, cut a 45º angle where they join. Clamp with scrap wood braces screwed together, wrapped in wax paper so they don't stick. Use PL glue, once it's set the joint will be stronger than the wood.

I've done it, exactly as in the plans. I screwed up one of the handle holes in a T39. So, I sliced off the part of the panel with bad hole. Grafted on a piece using the 45% cut as in the plans. Re-cut the hole. Sanded... You'd never know there was any problem. Worked like a charm.
