A sixpack of AutoTuba 10s did well for live sound

#1 Post by davygrvy »

Hi,

AutoTuba 10s (the 16" wide/tall version) for live sound? Sure, if your needs require the smallest footprint possible at 32" square.

Here's some more shots:

There's me in the blue hat and "SOUND GUY" t-shirt trying to dance off the alcohol, but failing miserably:

They're strapped together and about 350lbs of dead weight sits on top to help the extension. Original intent was to put all six under the stage in a row, but the host didn't want the stage to be modified, so I went with the 2x3 stack of them instead.

I have yet to measure the sixpack performance, but I will in a few weeks when I can bring them up the shop where I have access to MLSSA.

I found the extension to be superb playing Dark Side of the Moon's beginning heartbeat with excellent depth. The only problem I had was with the amp I rented to power them. I asked the rental guy for a 2ch amp that could do 50Vrms into 1.83Ω, but he lied to me and gave me a Crest 4001 which only did 36V. It resulted in the amps clipping early, so I dropped my limit point, and no one 'cept for me was any wiser. The drivers (HL10c) are reported to go into power compression around 400W (47Volts).

Average level back at the sound desk was around 106dbSPL (C weighted) which made the center of the dance area around 110. and the bottom-end was excellent. And excellent everywhere around the whole place. The knob turning guy was having an aural orgasm as was the organizer and myself ;)

With the subsonic synthesizer on 100% and the high-pass filter set to 28Hz, I heard more depth when I dropped it to 20Hz. I can only conclude I was getting content down that low with my sixpack. I have rarely heard dance music sound so good. I can not be more pleased with the quality of the bass I was getting.

Unfortunately, I can't compare this sixpack of AT10s to anything worth comparing to, sorry. The organizer who saw another live show up in Napa a few days later, thought our system sounded better :)

crossover: DBX DriveRack PA (Yeah!)
tweeters: ElectroVoice DH3 w/HPT94 horns (4)
mids: ElectroVoice EVM-12S Series II (but hemp reconed) in custom horns (4)
subs: BFM AutoTuba 10s w/Eminence HL10c (6)

Amps were:
Tweets: some POS that failed, then worked for the show, then failed the next morning (damn rental company)
Mids: Two Crown Reference II amps in parallel bridge mono, one per horn @ 715W each
Subs: An under-powered Crest 4001 @ 700W per bank of three AT10s

Yup, the Tone Tubbies! They're made of hemp. Here's an URL http://www.stereophile.com/news/053104hempcones/

And I had them done at A. Brown Soun, too.

I figured it had to be. I couldn't think of anyone using Hemp Cones as recons other than the factory originals.

Those TTs are highly regarded in the Industry and ABrown Soun their parent Co. are as well.

For you guitar minded types check out the link.

Just for fun, here's a couple more shots

My 11 month old daughter likes the colored cables going into the mixer. She also liked all the colored knobs on the front of it, too.

Those are cute pictures! Both of my kids grew up around it as well. I've never been afraid to let them them tinker, turn knobs, etc. My only loss has been a cassette deck my youngest pulled out of the cabinet some 18 years ago. He was dancing with the headphones on.

Ca I copy the "Sound Girl" pic?

"Now they expect to be paid!"

When boys ask for payment when they do "Roadie" Chores I threaten to stop feeding them.

I gladly pay my kids. They are great hands and I want them to want to continue to be. When they can't help, I have to pay someone else.

I'm right there with you. Learn 'em young. When my youngest (soon to be 16) goes to shows, even when he's not on the bill, he goes into "roadie mode" and helps out.
