Building material question

#1 Post by Knuckle Bones »

OK, so the back of the "butt cheeks" is called out as 1/8 birch. I can get my hands on 4X8 sheets of ABS that is 1/8 thick. Would that be acceptable to use as an alternative? It would be much easy and quicker to cut and install.

As long as it bends and you can glue it in it will work. Not sure why it would be any quicker to install than ply...

'Bendi ply' is probably better if you can get it

I used some large diameter plastic pipe for my last DR280's, cut and glued in place it worked very well:-

I installed it all so that my top and btm could be built in one go with no butt cheaks showing...

I routered a channel in the top and btm panels that the half round tubes located in.

It's easy to cut, easy to bend and easy to trim. No power tools needed....in fact, I can mark and sheer them to size....in multiples. So if I'm building 4 boxes and need 8 of them I can cut all of them at once.

Edit: I'd like to eliminate the butt cheek cut outs too.....they seem to be a difficult part of the process.

I think there was a post recently to the effect that ABS is notoriously difficult to glue/seal... maybe from Bill?

I can get a 2x4 piece of bendable 1/8" for $10 here. One nice thing about it is that it only bends along one axis, so vertically it's quite rigid. Also, I have ended up using it for patches in places where I make mistakes. Not sure ABS would be such a good trade.

That would have been polyethylene (PE, no we're not sticking Parts Express to a DR  )
