Not a tip...aka which way is up?

#1 Post by fender3x »

I have been trying my best to follow the directions, but clearly, I am a bit "direction impaired." For example. I know that when Bill says "bottom" on a DR, he means the end with the access port. Top is the end without one. Ports go at the top, so that they don't get in the way of installing the driver. I know all this...and yet...

I am still completely capable of drilling a hole for the port at the wrong end of the cab.

Fortunately, that is why the lumber store graciously sold me more 1/8" bendy plywood than I "needed." Cut out a piece for inside, and another for outside. Put the circle of 1/4" that I had just cut out back into the hole...and made a bendy plywood sandwich. A half hour with a sander and some 40 grit sometime tomorrow and it should feel right. Duratex will make it look right...

Eventually, once the PL wears off my forehead where I slapped myself with the palm of my hand, no one will be the wiser about this little setback ;-)

And give praise on high to he who invented Bondo, the fixer of all ills.

Ah well, shit happens. I'm sure it wasn't the first, won't be the last. The other day I routed a dado for brace on the wrong side. The outside has a beautful 1/4 slot down the middle.

Well, it did have one, anyway.

Here's a tip for the next time it happens:

Do it exactly like you did, but use a piece of wax paper in between the outside sandwich piece and the horn sheath. The when the PL dries you'll have a 'close to perfect' repair that will need little touch up.

It's going to happen again?!? There go my illusions of perfect builds from this point forward.

Wish I'd thought of your approach... Would have saved wear and tear on the sander!

Nice looking cab, fender! +1

Muchisimas gracias! Man there are a lot of steps to making one of these puppies...even if you don't count the mistakes as actual "steps" ;-)

My way worked...

Looks good!

When I said "next time it happens", I meant "Next time something like this happens". You could certainly apply it to other situations.

There is another way - I always have an access port top AND bottom on my DR's. If you plan ahead in the build it adds a max of 20 mins to have this and it makes fitting the woofer a whole lot easier as well.

He means that with access on top and bottom it wouldn't matter where the ports went, you'd still be able to get the woofer in at the other end.

Had a feeling that Harley might mention that. It may take 20 min to do...but I debated with myself for a coupe of days about whether to put an access port at both ends. I finally decided not to due to my abject stupidity when it comes to hurricane nuts. I just did not want to have anything else that needed sealing with those little suckers. I realize that my reaction was more visceral than rational. Also decided not to put a handle in the access port for similar reasons...one less seal that I could install badly.
