Wall-mount SLA or TLAH for 2.1 TV & Music

#1 Post by MartyMN »

Hello, looking for advice on whether SLA or TLAH is the 'better' choice for a new 2.1 system that will be used for general TV, streams, music, and the occasional movie. Firm believer in the Keep It Simple principle so no center channel or surrounds is preferred. I have some DIY experience mostly in metal fabrication so I don't have any fancy woodworking tools but I do have a circular saw and a router which should be sufficient for the construction of either system. I have not purchased anything for this setup, other than the couches, as I just moved in and didn't have a room like this in my last place.

It sounds like either system would blow my socks off at anywhere near 'full power' since this is not a large room with the main viewing/listening spot between 10 and 11 feet from the TV. Diagram here with the furniture (red) layout at the top and TV (blue) at the bottom where the speakers would be wall-mounted.

Rough view from the couch to get an idea of what the TV position would look like; eye height 42", 15 degree tilt backwards, FOV is 75 degrees. Speakers are not any specific dimensions as I have not yet purchased plans; TV is a 75" model so about 38" tall and 66" wide. I will build or buy furniture to fill out the space after this important part is decided.

What other constraints should I be thinking about or aware of? I don't have subwoofer so a Table Tuba will also be in my build list and I didn't both showing this in room diagram since I have no idea where it'll end up sounding best.

I'll continue browsing everything here to see what sort of questions & answers come up.

Thanks!

Either will do the job, the main differences being TLAH goes louder and has tighter vertical dispersion. You should have a center channel. So-called virtual center using just L/R doesn't come close to the experience of L/C/R, especially when the L/R are spread wide. Surrounds are also a must. There isn't any great reason for more than two rear surrounds, but if you don't have those you don't have a home theater, you're just watching TV.
