BB on sale so I've got a time sensitive question

#1 Post by dlv »

Hi All.

I'm about to start a build of 4 x 24" T48 with 4 x OT12, CD horns. Woodworker's Source in Phoenix is running a sale in July for 20% off all BB so I want to buy what I'll need now for the entire build.

I hope I'm not asking a question fully answered elsewhere but since I have to drive a couple hours to Phoenix to get this I want to be sure I'm getting what I need.

I've been studying build threads and the plans and I *think* I can get a 24" T48 made out of 2.5 sheets (4x8). So 10 sheets for 4 subs.

On the OT12s I'm not sure how many sheets each cab is going to take. I'm working on some cut layouts right now but wondering if anyone has some quick advice from experience. There are some fiddly cuts that I suspect I might want some extra for (and mistakes I'll surely make).

I know the OT12s also take some 1/4" for the CD horn but I'm guessing a single 5x5 sheet of 1/4" will do for all 4 horns.

Any advice is very much appreciated. I'm planning to run to Phoenix this week to pick this all up while on sale. At current wood prices 20% will save me a LOT.

Been running a gazillion options (almost literally) in CutSheet. The OCD in me is going nuts trying to optimize as little waste as possible but I know I'll make some mistakes so having a bit left over to deal with oopsies, make jigs etc. is for the best I'm sure.

FWIW what I'm seeing is 4x8 sheets is the way to go for both the OT12s and the T48s. Gonna take 13 sheets total. 3 sheets for 4x OT12s, 10 sheets for 4x 24" T48s. Plus some 1/4 inch for horns etc.

4x8 is harder to handle than 5x5 but everything is showing me it'll optimize better. 4x8's will ride better in my pickup as well.

Compare the prices. In my experience, 4x8 sheets usually cost quite a bit more per sqft. While they may optimize better, it may cost more in the end. Also, the precut list in the plans does not include braces. Make sure to account for the braces too, which can be done in 1/4 ply if you wish.
Build in process - 2 WH6, one Alpha 6a loaded, one PRV Audio 6MB250-NDY loaded

Two 2x6 shorty SLA Pro's
One T39, 16", 3012LF loaded
Tall AutoTuba, 20" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421
TruckTuba, 8½" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421

Thanks Seth. Yes I believe you're right that 5x5 does run a bit cheaper by the sq ft. Not a lot more at least at the place I'm buying it. I did go through the plans and made a complete precut list and added pieces for braces everywhere I could get a dimension. I used that to put into CutList and let it chew through both 4x8 and 5x5 materials to see what it turned out. It just worked out better (possibly because I'm building T48's?) with 4x8 and (a minor thing) those sheets fit in my 8' truck bed nicely. :D Even optimized there will be plenty of waste pieces to make small braces out of. I dug through the cutoff bin as well to get some pieces for jigs, material for caster boards etc.

Cheers!
