Car Audio Sub driver in Tuba 24

#1 Post by wan.7 »

Hi Guys,

I'm looking at building a Tuba 24 - mostly as a fun project for me and my son but I do intend to actually use it.

Anyway, I'm in Australia and don't have convenient access to all the great suppliers and parts that the US builders do. The recommended drivers for the Tuba 24 are either very difficult to find or unreasonably expensive (at least that I've been able to find). However the automotive subwoofer market is highly competitive with plenty of suppliers.

I was looking at the Alpine W10S4 Subwoofer.

https://www.alpine-usa.com/product/w10s4

FS - 32hz
QTS - 0.44
VAS - 34.7L
XMAX - 10mm

It's cheap and easy to get and it has TS Specs within the specified requirements of the plans. It also has a pretty decent power handling. Only downside I can see is poor sensitivity (86.6dB) but that's not a big problem as I have plenty of power I can throw at it.

I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions as to why this sub would be a poor selection.

Thanks,
Matt! :D

So long as the specs are OK it will work, but that driver frame isn't configured for rear mounting.

Sometimes, I'm amazed at the details you catch.
Build in process - 2 WH6, one Alpha 6a loaded, one PRV Audio 6MB250-NDY loaded

Two 2x6 shorty SLA Pro's
One T39, 16", 3012LF loaded
Tall AutoTuba, 20" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421
TruckTuba, 8½" wide, 2x 8" MCM 55-2421

Thanks! The mounting issue isn't too much a problem. I'll make up a bracket for the driver to mount to then mount that bracket into the sub. The driver will still be in the exact same location as per specs.

I've built a T24 and I can't figure out how any kind of bracket would solve the problem of the frame? Please explain.....

6 - T39 3012LF
4 - OT12 2512
1 - T24
1 - SLA Pro
2 - XF210

I'd use the extended driver surround option as shown in the THT and THTLP plans. The hole in the baffle would be cut large enough for the driver frame to fit through it. A separate driver mounting panel attaches to the baffle.
