Saw tops

#1 Post by Tom Smit »

I just finished watching a video which seems to say that it may be that conventional table saws won't be manufactured anymore. The new style will cost more. Here is the video which is 15 minutes long. I know, it's long, just watch it to the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxKkuDduYLk I trust the author of the video since I have watched quite a few of his videos, and he makes sense to me.

Very interesting!

Improving the safety of table saws has been long overdue. A friend of mine replaced his General Industrial table saw with a SasStop a few years ago. He is a strong proponent of the technology. Despite having decades of experience, he let his attention lapse for a moment and made a mistake. The SawStop destroyed his blade but saved his hand.

For a long time I thought SawStop was the villain because they weren’t licensing the technology and sued others (e.g., Bosch) to keep them from introducing similar safety technology.

If/when I replace my 20 year old DeWalt table saw, it’ll be with a saw that has safety features. The only thing holding me back has been the astronomical prices SawStop charges. They do make a good saw but not good enough to justify the premium they charge. It’s like they’re holding safety at ransom.

Hopefully, mandating all saws have such safety features will help. While the saws will undoubtedly cost more, it should mean that the safety features can be had at a lower price point than now.
