Another year of Concerts in the Park
We secured the contract one more time for doing the annual Concerts in the Park here in my hometown. This is our 8th or 9th year.
The first week was a close call as to whether we were going to have to call it due to rain. But, it stopped and were able to set up and get the show done in stupid humidity. Normally, we'd have the system set up like in the pics below, but there was a small lake right where they would go, so we put the subs on stage in a little different arrangement.
This system has done a lot of shows and is still cooking along just fine. I have to thank my old bass player, Earl (RIP) for turning me on the BFM site many years ago. He wanted me to build him a bass cab. Built a PA instead. He always called it his bass rig since we ran direct.
The pics from this week's show have a second rack down front. I mixed off the band's rack....it's one I built for them with a split snake and their in-ear rigs. Rack panels on the front and back to facilitate hookup. It was no problem mixing on their Presonus mixer as that's what I use. And there was no need to use the split and set up my mixer.
Still running the same Crown XLS amps that I have all along. 2500 for the tops, 3-1500s bridged for each pair of subs. Driveracks on the Mains and monitors. In the top of that rack, there's a Yamaha MG series analog board for "just in case". But, there's also an additional digital mixer in the trailer for backup.
I do split the subs in this situation as the steps in the front of the stage are a pain to work around. Also, I'm able to get them about 45 feet apart - with my high pass at about 47hz, there's only a couple of tiny nulls out front.
This rig has been good to me for a long time. People are always amazed that the subs are just 12s. And I love that the whole thing runs on a single 15Amp circuit.
Pics are clearer if you click on 'em.

You kidding? I hope they fire me.....it's too damned hot! It's just become so comfortable doing it that I hate to quit. But, 66 is happening in August....and my back is killing me, so who knows how long I'll keep it up. Maybe the next step is to turn it over to the guy that works with me and I can show up once in a while to tell everybody how we did it back in my day.Grant Bunter wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 4:26 pm Noice.

The cool thing is that they have really turned it over to me. I get to pick the bands. And this year, I picked my own. I used to play this thing all the time - with several different bands over the years. When I took over running sound, I didn't book myself anymore. But, I decided that, at my age, there ain't that many years of playing rock and roll left in me - so I did it. My next band will probably play rockers and rollators.

Re: Another year of Concerts in the Park
Thanks Seth.....we've always done this thing with a handshake, but I raised my price and that sent it to the finance department, along with a 21 page contract. I balked and they said they would re-open the negotitions. So, I charged 'em even more and got 'em to make a change in the contract that I had a problem with.
Now, I'm locked in at that price for three years.....but, I don't see me doing this in three years unless that surgeon will agree to fix my back.. Hopefully, the last MRI will get 'em to schedule me for the procedure.
It's hell gettin' old, but at least I'm still waking up on the right side of the dirt.

The first thing I do everyday is to look at the obituaries. If my name isn't there it's a good day. I don't recall if I mentioned it before, but I suffered from debilitating sciatica for years. I haven't had an attack since I started taking 1000 mg of turmeric every day. That's eight years.

I take turmeric every day and have for quite a while. I have stenosis of the spine. There's a neurosurgeon in San Antonio who's pioneered some of the procedures to alleviate it. I've been jumping through his office's hoops to try and get an audience. Hopefully, the last MRI will give 'em what they need to move the process along. I'm a guy that used to play golf 4-5 times a week.....but, I haven't played in about 3 years now. I'd really like to get this fixed while I can still fog a mirror.Bill Fitzmaurice wrote: ↑Sun Jun 18, 2023 7:17 am The first thing I do everyday is to look at the obituaries. I don't want my headstone to read, "Well, at least his back doesn't hurt anymore".

I walk 9 holes three or four days a week. It doesn't bother my back any more than the more or less constant background ache from arthritis. Just this spring I got an electric bike, which I ride on the days I don't play golf. Even with the electric assist you still get a good aerobic workout, and the cooling you get from the wind chill keeps it comfortable when it's too hot to walk anywhere.

Re: Another year of Concerts in the Park
They diagnosed my L1-5 arthritis first. I went through two rounds of injections, then tried abaltion. When that didn't work, we started the MRIs and found the bigger issue. I've been able to control the back problems for 20 years through stretching, etc. But, the last three years have been a giant PITA.Bill Fitzmaurice wrote: ↑Sun Jun 18, 2023 10:22 am I walk 9 holes three or four days a week. Glad you are able to get out and play golf and ride the bike.... Walking is good for the back, but when you can't walk because your back hurts - it's a vicious circle.
But, I count my blessings because there are many in much worse shape than I am. My problems are not life-threatening, only life-altering. If there's an upside, I get a pass on loading and unloading PA gear.

Re: Another year of Concerts in the Park
In winter there's no golf, so I walk two miles a day, weather permitting. Sometimes the sidewalks are impassable for a few days, so I'm forced to sit around. That's when my back really bothers me. When I'm able to get back out the first half mile feels bad, but after that it feels better. On a related subject when I was first diagnosed with arthritis what hurt the most was my knees. My doctor told me I'd need replacements sooner or later. That's when I started on glucosamine. Within a month my knees felt much better, and they haven't gotten any worse since then. That was 30 years ago.

Not to turn this into an "old guy home remedy" thread, but I keep reading more and more good things about the amino acid N-Acetyl Cysteine and its anti-inflammatory / anti-oxidant properties. I also haven't been able to find much, if anything, in the way of side effects or drawbacks. Obviously, you can find it in a hundred different places than Amazon, but:Bill Fitzmaurice wrote: ↑Sun Jun 18, 2023 7:17 am I take turmeric every day and have for quite a while.

It's recommended to take it with a gram or two of glycine to boost its effectiveness.

I take it before and after I run; it *seems* to prevent overuse injuries.
2 DR250s, 2 27" Lab15 T-60s, 2 30" Neo Titan 39s, 1 Autotuba...and looking for more!

For that price it better work.
I got onto turmeric after seeing a study about arthritis on the Indian subcontinent. They have the same rate of arthritis there, but much less pain from it. The answer why is turmeric. They practically live on it as the main ingredient in curry. It's a low dose anti-inflammatory. The bad news is you have to take it every day, but it's so cheap you can easily afford to. When Covid hit and I saw that the main cause of death wasn't the virus but the inflammation that resulted I doubled my turmeric dosage just in case. My thoughts were confirmed months later when the Covid numbers started coming in from India. The reported cases were much lower than most countries. The death rate was 1/10 that of the US.

Re: Another year of Concerts in the Park
Well, I finally booked my own band this year. My sound partner mixed FOH for us last night.
This picks up with the first song....kind of a fanfare opener into Let it Roll - a Little Feat tune. Couldn't figure out how to embed the video, but the link will get you there.....sometimes the sometimes quality is great, other times I clicked on it the video is blurry.....
And yes, I'm the fat guy with the sunburst Les Paul.

To embed the video, you just need the portion of the video address in blue below, the jumble of letters and numbers after the equal sign. Select the "youtube" button in the "post a reply" and copy/paste it in the middle. Or you can paste that portion of the address in the reply, highlight it, then select "youtube" and it will wrap the highlighted area with the appropriate code.
