Wiring a T39...

#1 Post by fender3x »

I have six wires going from the driver compartment to the back panel of on the world's slowest T39 build. (The reason for so many wires is here: http://billfitzmaurice.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1603). I have been obsessing about how to run the wires without drilling a separate hole for each wire, and yet keep things airtight.

What I ended up doing is cutting a slot that was about the size of the wire gage I am using. I filled the slot with PL, coating the wires as well, and then put all the wires side by side into the slot. Then I filled the slot with a piece of wood, and coated generously with PL. The result was messy (as seen below) but air tight:

It ain't pretty, but it worked...sort of...so here's the warning: Once I had the wires in, and the PL set, I decided to test the continuity of each wire, since the next step in my build is to seal the whole thing up forever. Sure as <insert favorite explative here> one of the wires had a problem.

Moral of the story:

DO check the continuity of all wires that are going to be sealed up forever.

DON'T wait until you have everything glued into place to do the check.

You'll see, in one of the pics, an extra green wire shooting through above the others...that's the one that replaces the broken wire. Doesn't add much to the aesthetics...but at least all that is inside and out of view...and I caught it before putting the side in place.

How many tubes of pl for the t-39? My record is 5 (regular size NOT large) for my first t-36   Glue is cheap, don't be afraid of it :D

I am on tube #3. The innards on my build look like...well...innards. There's PL slathered EVERYWHERE. This is not one of those super pretty, clean insides like the ones in the frappr banner....

Hey fender...I'm doing my 1st build ever, an O10. Not even to the carpet stage of the build yet and I've gone thru a LARGE tube of PL! 'Course, I am slathering it on like a kindergartner

Accept the fact that airtight and well-braced are more important than pretty on the inside. Bill Fitzmaurice

 What are you guys doing, using it for primer?

A 3/16 to 1/4 bead is ample. Just enough for some sqeezeout. Clamp the board, look along the entire edge for squeezeout. Leaves just a nice little 1/8 bead to scrape from the joint.

IIRC, I used less than a tube on a titan48. Just about a tube on a 2xOT15.
If it's too loud, you're even older than me! Like me.

That's what I was thinking. I just built 2-DR250's and a Wedgehorn with less than 2-1/4 tubes.
