Simplexx 15 Subwoofer

#1 Post by WalkerRichmondRanger »

Built a 15" Simplexx Sub to complement my pairs of 4x6 SLA Pros and Wedgehorn 8's.

Driver used is a Eminence Kappalite 3015LF. I'll be powering my system with a single Behringer NU4-6000 amp which is about 300W RMS on 4 channels. Right now running a stereo main feed, mono sub, and single monitor feed (turned WAAAY down for the WH8's).

First impressions are very good. Been messing around with the crossovers a bunch and trying to get the levels straight between the highs and lows. It definitely can't keep up with the SLA's (as expected), but what bass is there sounds great. Way cleaner and tighter than the 18" powered Seismic sub I just returned. Weight is around 48lbs. Really easy to lug around. I'm thinking of building another to run in parallel.

Liking the unpainted ports. It reminds me of my own builds - you get that moment when you realise that you should have painted them about 5 steps ago! :wall: Still, they are out of sight so no real issues

Total build time.....hmm. If my shop were more organized where I could find ANYTHING, probably half the time it actually took.

So for the 2nd one I build I'll estimate:
4 solid hours to clean and organize the shop
Then 2-3 hours per evening for four evenings.
I'd say I'm going to be on the longer end of that range. I'm still a bit of a novice in the shop, but nothing difficult with this build. Way easier thank my Jack 10 or Wedgehorn 8's. About on par with an SLA PRO without having to deal with the more complex baffle, crossover wiring, and the tweeter array.

Evening one:
Cut main pieces
Assemble main pieces
Cut holes in baffle/backer, Cut screw retainers
Assemble baffle assembly
Install baffle assembly

Evening two:
Cut and install ducts
Cut and install bracing
Install damping
Cut and install top

Evening three:
Sand and roundover cabinet
First coat duratex
Done with power tools, yay! Drink some beer and watch paint dry!
Second coat duratex
Drink more beer, watch more paint dry!

Evening four:
Wire jacks
Install jack plate, handles, corners
Wire/install speaker
Leak test
Install speaker cover
Play your wife's favorite song at earbleeding volume so she doesn't actually mind the entire house shaking.

Haha.....yeah..... I'm betting it won't see too much time upside down. There's even a part where a paper grocery bag I was using to cover the work table got stuck and I had to rip it off the bottom.....but yeah....no one is gonna see it.
