I am planning on building a "basic" bass speaker cabinet using some old drivers that I have on hand. They are 6" drivers built around 1995 and were originally
intended for car sterios. They are weighty and have a 4 ohm resistance.
I am planning on a 2x2 layout and am wondering if a baffle board between the pairs will have any affect on the sound. Would vertical or horizontal baffling be preferred? Presently I am leaning on a vertical board which would have the affect of two speakers side by side. I am not intending to seal the unit so the baffle board would not go all the way to the back of the cabinet. (but it could if it would matter). As I do not have any other specs on the beasts I am working blind. Thinking of an 18"x18" mounting board for the drivers with a depth of 12" and a 1" opening running along the bottom.
The unit will have an enclosed back but not be a sealed cabinet.
I hope that I have not lost anybody yet.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? (other than get different drivers).
It is my first build and I plan on using the cabinet as a practice unit.
Thanks a bunch..

You lost me completely.
Ok, so are you building a subwoofer? a full cab? or a bass guitar stack?
And i'm also not getting whether you'll be porting them or leaving the cab open. And if you're working on them blind, there's not really much recommend, really. But I'm still confused on what exactly it is you're going to be doing.

Re: cabinet using 4 6" speakers
Using some context clues, it would seem the cab is being planned for bass guitar rehearsal.
If that is the case, I see a few glaring problems:
1) the 2x2 layout will cause beaming of the treble and midrange.
2) if those speakers are designed as car subwoofers/woofers, they probably have horrible upper midrange response.
3) as a result of 1 and 2, you may end up pushing this faux-cab beyond it's capabilities and end up frying the drivers, completely negating all the hard work you put into building the cabinet.

I probably shouldnt enter in at this stage in my night but i've been worse before.
What was said before my post is right on. You're asking Bill to help you invent or design a sub cab. Many others have too. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say a busy guy like him might not wanna? So just buy some cheap behringer box or at least dont tell anyone you got ideas here after you put onions on ice cream and call it a treat. They are both good but not meant to go together.
I am not trying to be a smart a$$ or mean, but this is like going to a ford dealership and asking them to advise on what to buy in a junk yard that will make a hummer.
Bill's constant passion for these great cabs is never ending and if some laying around stuff worked to the value of one hour of your build time, i'm betting he'd suggest it.
What is offered on this site for build possibilities has allowed me to sell probably $10,000 worth of over weight, power hungry garage sale garbage ( JBL, EV, MACKIE, RENKUS HEINZ, so on ) and replace it with the best pro sounding gear $ can buy " on the cheap ". NOT lacking quality.
Let some people chime in. So my advice, #1 hire a builder or #2, build anything "sub" here yourself and brag about it as long as you live. You found the right place so hang around

Re: cabinet using 4 6" speakers
There's a right way, and at least a dozen wrong ways, to utilize four 6" drivers. This is the right way, as a pair of 2x6 or one 4x6:

Whether that's an option with the drivers you have depends on their T/S specs and frequency response.

Re: cabinet using 4 6" speakers
Thanks for the input. Perhaps the 2x6's would be a better way to go for what I am trying to do. Also, it would enable me to make available 2 practice cabs instead of only one. I do not expect to get a Lexus sound out of them; but I
don't se why I would not be able to get an Echo.

I'm sure I could come up with more than a dozen wrong ways....Bill Fitzmaurice wrote:There's a right way, and at least a dozen wrong ways, to utilize four 6" drivers.
