SLA Pro build thread

So, the time has come again for me to build another design. As part of what feels like "collect the series" I'm building a single SLA Pro.

The first stage of this project was getting access to my table saw. The garage has been a tip for far too long and I've spent more time organising and binning that will probably take to build it!

I've purchased my Alpha 6's already and they have been through a breaking in process. Although I shouldn't need them for a top, it can't hurt.

The main application for this SLA Pro is a monitor for the electric kit and it is being paired with a T18. These will double up as a very small, portable music rig.

I'm building the four driver version rather than the mini and it will be interesting to see how it stacks up against a DR200.

Four pieces cut, front back and sides.

Also, the crossover components arrived but the resistors are different from the last time, so I'm not sure if I ordered the wrong ones. I couldn't get 30Ohm resistors, only 33 and 27 were available, so I opted for 27. I don't know what difference it will make.

Here is a picture of the Jack crossover and you can see the different resistor type. Do I need to get some different resistors ordered or will the ones I have do?

Wire wound, with ceramic white coating, as per your top pic, have been fine in my DR's.
Oh, and they came from Leland...

The resistors are within the requisite 10% value tolerance.

nice saw! love the dado's, did something similar with my cabs via cnc.

There is often talk about the orientation of the inductor. Is it fine as it is or do I need to rotate it? I've never bothered before.

No worries there . . you've got plenty of offset.

What about a WH10?

It isn't as flexible and it's massive!

With the T18/SLA Pro combo you can go lower and run the E-Kit in a PA without subs.

Those look great - what did they look like finished?

I'm really interested to know what the SLA Pro sounds like next to the DR200.

hmm.. I dunno if I have any "finished" photos that are any good.

I've always been somewhat curious about this concept.

In 35 years of playing live acoustic drums, I can't recall even a big gig I've played where a sub has been used in drumfill. I'm not a fan of kidney bruising drumfill anyway, unlike a lot of (slightly) older guys that are deaf from having that sort of drumfill in the late 60's and 70's, that I have talked to over the years.
More often than not, drumfill is 1 or maybe 2 x 15" fullrange cabs. More than enough to hear thump and click. Plenty for me. Add some snare and vox and I'm good. No toms, cymbals etc.
Depending on stage size maybe add dribbles of bass, guitar and or keys.
Even when running vox only type PA, with a dribble of kick, that's enough thump (via FOH), for me to be able to lock in.

A couple of times here on the forum, I've seen comments about needing drumfill that covers the audible/tactile spectrum of the kit when playing electronic drums.
I simply don't understand why.
If I can't hear 30Hz in my fill (if it's even there from my kick), it doesn't make me play differently.

More to the point, great build Chris :)
Also rather jealous you just happen to have a 3015lf lying around for your sizing comparison lol...

It's not really a drum fill - it's more a drum back line. I also don't see the need for 30Hz, the choice of the T18 wasn't about bandpass, more about size. With the sub and top being separate (as opposed to the W10/Jack etc) I get far better control of on stage room modes and hopefully the band will be able to here things fine.

The focus is on clarity and volume control. I'm going to test mixing the bass guitar and e-kit into a single back line to conserve further space. I think the T18/SLAP (like the pun?!) will make nice bass cab.

I've wired the crossover, ready to glue:

Unfortunately, no SLA wood cutting today and the Tour De France is in town on Sunday, so hopefully I can finish all the cab cuts Saturday.

Got some more time this morning to do some more cutting.

The internal braces are cut:

I've marked the driver holes and the piezo holes as well as the ports/handles. I made a trip to town with the Mrs since the protracter I had was quite simply rubbish. I'm going to redraw all the driver holes before cutting with a jigsaw:

This is all there is to an SLA Pro:

I alway like to do a quick dry fit to make sure everything is in order:
