Berhinger DC3400 ???
Hey guys I am finally am about to finish up a pair of T30 for my bro in law. I told him he needed to get a limiter. He purchased a berhinger DC3400. I had told him about the DriveRack pal but he is old school. Will this work for running 2 T30's and 2 OTops?

The limiter needs to be brick wall to start with, most importantly for sub high pass.
Brick wall limiting has at least 24dB reduction in either LR or BW slopes.
6dB of reduction just doesn't cut it.
There's a heap of DSP rack units out there that will brick wall limit, the Driverack series and the DCX2496 series being two examples.
Or there are amps with onboard sufficient brick wall limiting as well.
Nothing else will prevent blown drivers in the subs.
If he's old school enough, he should know about horn loaded cabs.
He may not know that in this day and age they need to be limited.

Your bro in law is about to get a lesson in 'buy cheap, buy twice' when it comes to speaker protection but with the added cost of having to purchase more drivers too!
I guarantee when the speakers stop making noise he'll say something about them being shit, people who do things wrong always try to point the finger at anyone/thing other than themselves.
Write him up an invoice now.

Thanksyou all for the reply. I told him about the drive rack px but i guess he found a deal that sed limiter and figured it would work. I will let him try my px and let him hear the the difference.
BTW i covered the subs with rat fur anf aluminum. Rails on the edges ala 70's style

Will do. What freq should I set the xover at? Low pass at 40Hz and high pass at 100Hz?
I also need to read up on setting the limiter. I have only run my PA with a pair of euro live berhinger speakers. I need to run thru the setup up a few times to understand how it works so I can explain it to bro in law. When I set the limiter should I have the speaker leads unplugged ?

Gotta' get the nomenclature correct. You set the high pass for the sub at 40hz. That means everything higher than 40 "passes" through. Set the low pass for the sub at 100hz - everything lower than 100 passes through.
On the tops, set the high pass at around 106-110. Everything above that goes through to the tops.

One quick question on XLR cables. Can pin 1 and the chassis ground be hooked up together?
I am making up some cables with shielded cable, 2 conductors and ground wrapped around them. The wrapped wire I plan on connecting to pin 1 and the chassis ground.
Is this method ok?

I never connect the shield to the housing. If it was supposed to be that way, the connectors would be built so that it is easier to do - right?
Just make good solder joints, use quality connectors (I prefer Neutrik), and pay attention to the strain relief. Your DIY cables will last longer than the crap on the shelf.

Yes, from what I have read Neutrik is the way to go. I can solder it up easy, mainly wondering if it could cause problems, eliminate them or not needed at all.
I soldered one up, just made the ground a little longer and looped it to the chassis ground. I can easily cut if you think it can potentially cause a problem.

It's just one more short piece of wire inside the housing that can come apart and cause a short somewhere else.

Typically for our purposes the XLR shell is not connected to pin 1. Doing so creates the possibility of ground loops when inline connector shells are touching each other or other grounded objects. As well, depending on the equipment being connected, different manufacturers in the past employed various pin 1/ chassis ground schemes again creating the possibility of ground loops.y2kindyz wrote:Thanks Guys I comprende now.

The only conditions where it is advisable and advantageous to connect the XLR shell and pin 1, is in broadcast use and wherever high frequency, high strength RF fields exist. Grounding the shell in this instance creates a continuous Faraday shield around the connector.
