Alpha 6C For WH6 or SLA PRO?

#1 Post by JonoSkip »

Can anyone tell me if the Alpha 6C can be used in any of Bills cabs? Can get some cheap. Looks to just be a 4 Ohm version of the 6A. Thanks in advance.

I knew I had seen it somewhere before

this topic

I got all excited and just pulled the trigger on 4 of these for NZ$110 total. :fruit: Figure I can build some WH6 or SLA PRO minis. Either that or they will go back on Trade Me!

G'day Jono :)

There are some Eminence drivers that require lower voltage limits when you switch to the 4 ohm version. The BP102 immediately springs to mind.

I don't know for a fact if this may be the case with the Alpha 6c.

Since it only takes a measly 50 watts at 120Hz to hit Xmax with the 8 ohm version in a WH6, any possibility that that limit may be reduced with a 4 ohm model is a concern.
You would only ever be able to wire 1 cab/channel if the amp is 4 ohms minimum/channel unless you paired 2 cabs serial wired, which is probably not the best way to go.

In a SLA pro mini is a different story though IMO
2 x Alpha 6c serial wired in cab would be 8 ohms. Potentially quite useable...

DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Hi Grant :)
Good to chat again and I thought I might get a reply from you due to the time zone we're in. Thanks for your comments. I thought that for WH6 with the 6C I could just two cabs in series for a 8 Ohm load which would be usable.

Trouble is, if I build 2 WH6 then I have 2 drivers left over and what do I do with them? It's good to have spares but I doubt I'll ever need them so I could sell them I suppose. If I build the SLA Minis then at least I have used them all.

I don't have the plans for either cab so I guess that will be next. I've been wanting an excuse to buy the CD. Of course I'm overlooking the fact that I don't own a mixer or an amp that can drive them but this purchase was a step in the right direction! :hyper:

Bill (or anyone else)
Can you advise please

1. Is the Eminence Alpha 6C suitable for use in the WH6?
2. Is the 4 Ohm impedance too low or the need to run 2 WH6 in series to get 8 Ohm's too inflexible (meaning both WH6 would have to have the same mix)?
3. What would be the Voltage or Watts limit to reach Xmax be and at what frequency please?
4. Is there a formula or is it a measured value when things like
50 watts at 120Hz to hit Xmax with the 8 ohm version in a WH6
are given?

Thanks.

The reason the 6c isn't recommended is that 4 ohm drivers are a PITA. At best you can parallel two cabs, and that's only if your amp will handle a 2 ohm load. Series wiring of separate cabs can be done, but it's a PITA as well.
There isn't any voltage limit specified for Wedgehorns because you'll hear them distorting at no more than half the thermal capacity.

Got it, thanks Bill.

Just to finish things off, what about my last question about the statement being calculated from a formula or is it a measured result?
